Weight Loss 101

Before beginning my weight loss journey, I was completely clueless as how to go about losing weight in a healthy way. A lifelong dieter, I was only used to jumping on fad, trend, or crash diets only to have any pounds I was actually able to lose come back and bite me in the butt later! I decided to chronicle the steps I’ve taken to go lose 60 pounds off of my original weight of 246 so that anyone else out there who is looking to change their life might have an easier time of figuring out where to start. :)

      • I have battled my weight most of my adult life. The pounds seem to go on very easy, but getting rid of them is very difficult and it is very easy to get discouraged, but the only diet plan that really works is the one we stick with.

    I came across your story in Calorie Count and was inspired. I love your sense of humour and was very touched by your story of how you perceived yourself earlier. Thank you.

    I’ve lost 24 lbs in about 5 months but now seem to be losing my resolve. Begun eating a lot of junk :( and I’m scared! How do I stop? I need to lose another 40 lbs and need motivation and tips on how I should change my schedule. I keep to about 1800 calories and workout (cardio with a bit of strength) for at least 45 minutes every day.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    • Thank you so much Brinda! I completely understand that backsliding feeling you’re talking about. It sounds like what you’re doing is really good, but I know it’s hard not to slip back into old habits. I don’t know if I have any specific advice, other than maybe to try mixing up what you’re eating? Try new recipes for healthy things and all that? I know that when I start eating junk it’s because I’m bored with “healthy” eating. I have to remind myself that eating healthy doesn’t mean eating the same thing all the time (which is what I tend to do, haha.)

      Just remember that this weight loss is a long, slow process too. So just because you may have hit a bit of a plateau it doesn’t mean that you’re not doing the right stuff!   7. I like to see avocados on the menu anywhere but to see them included in a diet blog is heart-warming. The other thing I liked was the way you cut them into pieces for eating. I usually use a desert spoon and slide the fruit out that way. BTW, did you know that avocado farming as a business, is very labour intensive here in Australia and that is one reason why they can often be a bit expensive in stores? But they are worth every cent for taste and nutrition.

  9. Don’t do a ton of crunches if you’re trying to lose belly fat. Crunches don’t burn much fat, and too much attention on your abs can cause problems for your back and your posture. When you exercise for weight loss try to keep a balanced approach so you can lose weight all over.

  67. Indeed I have tried many times to lose weight methods. Some were expensive, some not. Of all the methods we present in the 8 items, one that cost very little and gives the best results is the one that tells of movement and exercise. They have worked in my case, being able to lose from 105 kg to 85 in a very short time. Waiting for new articles on this topic. :)

  74. Good list. I agree with most of it although I would narrow losing weight (for most) down to 3 things:

    1. Counting chemicals, not calories. If you eat 100% clean and avoid processed foods, fast food, junk, etc…it’s really hard to over eat. See http://www.TheBlogAge.com for a list of foods that you should be eating regularly…

    2. Walk. Most anyone can do it (for the most part) and unless you can’t walk, there’s no excuse not to do it. Shed some pounds and then work in some other workouts into your daily life but make walking a habit. 30 min a day, twice a week to start and then increase the days. In the end, take a day off every week and walk the other 6.

    3. Get adequate sleep. I can’t stress this enough. If you don’t sleep well, your body stores fat and other BS for energy. Your sugar levels will be all jacked up and if you don’t sleep well for a prolonged period of time, you can permanently alter your metabolism which is a no no.

    *I didn’t mention staying hydrated because that’s a no brainer for most. Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water a day. If you’re 200lbs, aim for 100oz of water daily. Don’t like water? Squeeze a lemon in it, add organic apple cider vinegar, a lime, something…

    If you need caffeine (or just want it), have a cup of black coffee in the morning and hot tea in the evening.

  80. I have been in the “exercise business” for about 12 years now. I’ve worked in and have run a hand full of gyms, alone with a degree. The one thing I have learned is that the female body works very different from a mans. It is typically harder for women to loss weight and keep it off. My fiance has always had a hard time loosing weight, so we have tried a lot of different things to no avail. Until now, my fiance has lost 53 pounds in the past 4 months…it’s been incredible. Go ahead and check this out maybe it’ll help you.
