Happy <3 Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!

Harry and Daxter got to spend a large chunk of yesterday at their favorite place in whole wide world: the groomer! So they came home sporting gentlemanly beards and heart-spotted Valentine’s bandannas. Oh, how I love my tiny old man dogs. Heeee. 😀

Why did you do this to me?

Valentine’s Day is one of those “holidays” (I use the term loosely) that I’ve always really liked, even when I wasn’t romantically attached. I know a lot of single people rally against this day, but I dunno. I guess that even when I wasn’t in a relationship, I just liked what the day stands for. Love, y’know? Because, let’s be honest, I am a huuuuuge drippy romantic cheeseball at heart. (This should really not surprise anyone though. I mean, you guys have seen how into weddings I am. I am pretty ridiculous.)

Sean is keeping me in the dark about our Valentine’s Day plans tonight, the wonderful jerk. He absolutely LOVES planning surprises and I am the wooooorst at waiting patiently for them. I have a love-hate relationship with surprises, actually. I love the IDEA of being surprised, but I also want to know everything ever ahead of time (I’m the kind of person who actually loves reading spoilers for movies, haha). So all I know is that we have dinner reservations SOMEWHERE in DC. But other than that, zilch. Hopefully he a least got the memo about me giving up sweets and desserts for Lent though (what unfortunate timing!) and forewent the box o’ chocolates this year. I wonder if an Edible Arrangement would count against my Lenten sacrifice? 😉

Anyway! Since I have no idea where we’re going or what we’re doing, I guess I’ll report back in tomorrow with the V-Day celebration. In the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day! Just remember to bask in the love, mon amis–whether that’s relationshippy love, familial love, or–the best love of all–the canine kind.

Proof of Run

Oh hey!

I actually followed through with (the first day of) a workout plan for once, whaddya know? Yesterday evening, I met up with my lovely friend Joy for a nice 3-mile jaunt on the bike trail. My ankle was giving me some grief after a while, so it ended up being more like 2.5 miles ran, .5 mile walked or so, but still! We maintained a really good pace (er, for me) while running too, which was quite novel. The weather conditions were pretty perfect, too — breezy with the sun still peeking out as it set.

My legs do admittedly feel a little heavy today though (so pathetic, haha), so I’m actually kind of glad that I have Zumba tonight to work ’em out a little bit. All the jumping and bouncing we do in those classes really works my hamstrings… which is a very good thing as it turns out. Due to a little last-minute race leg change-up, I’m now the first runner in the relay. While I’m totally STOKED to kick-off the relay and absorb all that awesome starting-line energy (one of the things I love most about racing), it also means that my first leg is going to be straight uphill for an entire mile. I know. I KNOW. Just thinking about it makes me want to do this:

Just bury me under these pillows and go on without me, team.

But alas! I’m going to rock it out, and the (literal) mountain shall indeed be conquered! I intend on switching up the 3.5-mile treadmill run I had originally planned for tomorrow and replacing it with a 1- or 1.5-mile incline run instead, along with some weight-work perhaps. I’m just going to crank the tready’s incline up to 5 and see how long I can last, hahaha…ha…ha.

In other news, look at Daxter’s hilarious face!

And that, as they say, is that. Random? Maybe. But I really couldn’t think of a smoother transition, and I felt the need to share his adorable mug with you all today. Don’t even try to say you don’t love it just a little bit. 🙂

Have a great tolerable Tuesday! (Since Tuesday is by far the absolute worst day of the week, I feel it would be wildly presumptuous to think that anyone could have a “great” day today, hahaha.)

PS: I’ve got a Daily Eats post coming your way in a few, too! SHOCK! Who am I?!

La Italia Famiglia

Good morning, friends! Happy Vampire Diaries Day Thursday! We’re over halfway through the week and the weekend is in sight, so rejoice! I don’t know about you guys, but this week has felt incredibly looooooooooong.

So yesterday in honor of my Shoe Dog running analysis and brand spankin’ new Sparks BROOKS shoes (I almost got it right this time!) I literally hit the pavement for a quick jaunt to start breaking them in.

Bam! Proof! I didn’t end up going very far – just about a mile, but I was actually running toward a destination. See, Ben‘s car broke down and he was waiting at a repair shop very close to the house. So I figured I’d do my sisterly duty and go keep him company.

The shoes felt pretty good, and I’m really digging the insoles that I bought (not custom, but nice!) but I still am having a lot of trouble with running outside. I think it may be because I started running on a treadmill, and the only REAL outdoor runs I’ve done have been for actual races or when I’ve been running with someone else who helps me keep pace. Otherwise, I always start off waaaaay too fast, and then get tired and winded very early, and the pavement’s not like a treadmill where if I just stop or slow down I fall off so… I stop. It’s lame, I know. But at least I’m trying!

At least when I went to go meet up with Ben at the auto shop, we got to see this:

It was the biggest, clearest, most vibrant rainbow I think I’ve ever seen in person! Now, granted it was no double rainbow, but it was still very pretty. (But check out the storm clouds looming in the background… yeah.)

See, I can get on board with nature! Just stop stinging my foot and biting my dogs and we’ll get along okay. 😛

So last night, post run and auto-repair, the bro, the mama, and myself all went to dinner at Argia’s, a local Falls Church Italian joint that has the option to eat “Famiglia”, or Family, style. Being a half-Chinese family, we’re used to doing dinners family-style, and when we asked how much food it would be they told us that it should feed “2 to 3 people.” Remember those infamous words.

OMG. It was SO much food! 2 to 3 people? Try 3 to 5… maybe. We ordered mussels in white wine sauce, caesar salad, and spaghetti al pesto. It was all delicious, but we had no idea it would be so much! We had actually gotten 2 orders of the mussels (yipes!) and then the salad came out bigger than life itself. We did manage to polish both of those off though (naturally, haha) so by the time the pasta dish came out it was game over. I put like 3 bites of it on my plate and was donezo. I guess at least we have plenty of leftovers!

The star of the show were the mussels for me, so if you’re ever in the area with a hankering for some old world Italian food, get ’em! They’re half-price on Wednesdays. Mmmm.

So that’s what I’ve got for you for now! Oh, but before I let you go, let’s get in today’s gratuitous schnauzer pics, shall we?

Somebody’s been grroomed! Daxter came out looking kind of like a poodle but it’s really cute so I’m okay with it. I’ll just tell everyone he’s a schnoodle and it’ll be extra exotic, ahahaha.

What are your tips for running outside? How do I better pace myself? Make sure I don’t get ahead of myself? As it’s warming up and the weather is getting so beautiful, I’d really love to be able to start, y’know, enjoying it on a run. Thoughts?

Daxter Turns 1!

We’re taking a short break from the regularly scheduled post-cruise post (heh) for this very special occasion! Everybody please join me in wishing a very happy first birthday to Daxter!!

To celebrate, I took Daxter to Dogma Bakery and Wylie Wagg to pick up some birthday treats!

Don’t worry, I didn’t give it all to them! Not yet, anyway… hehe. The pups waited in rapt anticipation:

Harry was giving Daxter some serious evil eye… a little jealous of the attention, I think!

But don’t worry, he got to reap the benefits of the celebration too, of course! A “Peamutt Butter” muffin for each, yumyum!

They finished every scrumptious bite, and then licked the crumbs off the floor! Guess I don’t need to mop today, huh? Happy Birthday, puppy! Yes, there may be chewing, pooping, barking, whining, and other general puppyness, but I couldn’t imagine life without you!
