The Lost Weigh-in

Between the logging of my weigh-ins on My Fitness Pal and reporting my %s of weight lost for Yelp’s Biggest Loser and, of course, all of the dancing around my bathroom that I do every time I have a loss, it only just occurred to me that I never actually blogged about my weigh-in from this past Friday!

Bad weight loss blogger! Bad Gretchen!

This is actually a reaction shot to experiencing my very first raw oyster this weekend (I did actually like it, once I got over the initial weirdness!), but I figured the expression was still apt, haha.

Anywho, rest assured that the information did not go unrecorded, so I’ll just catch you up right quick on my most recent foray onto the scale.

(Re)Starting Weight: 236.6 lbs
Last Weigh-in: 227.5
This Weigh-in: 226.2 lbs
Difference: -1.3 lbs

Hallelujah and blessed be, I have made it to the 10 pounds lost club yet again! I am a very happy camper indeed that I have yet to have a week without at least some kind of loss (although I know a gain or a stall will happen eventually, I’m just gonna be happy with what I’ve got for as long as I’ve got it!) and hopefully a full ten libbies means that maybe the slimdown is starting to be semi-noticeable?

It’s so hard for me to tell, not only because I’m, y’know, me, and thus I see myself every day and so subtle changes are difficult to see, but also because of my frame, even when I’m not at my current weight, losing or gaining five pounds doesn’t really mean much to the naked eye.

But whether it’s wishful thinking or actual fact, I do think that some of my clothing is starting to fit a little nicer again, and I feel like my stomach might just be a millimeter or two flatter. Onward, downward, and whatnot, right? Here’s hoping that I continue to do really well this week, because I’m off to San Francisco next weekend to spend an entire week with my Yelpy coworkers in one of the foodiest cities in the country! Urrrrk!

Lunch Packer, Part II (Weigh-in)

So I am very pleased to announce that my lunch packing initiative is still going strong. Huzzah! I’ve been putting my new lunch bag to very good use, and I already feel like I’m saving money (which is good, because I just spent $1300 on a laptop, bahahaha).

Some of you pointed out (rightly so!) that the last lunch I posted seemed a little lacking, and I kept meaning to continue with the daily eats trend to show the variety in my lunches, but I failed. I REALLY wish I had remembered to take a picture of yesterday’s lunch though, cause it was banging. Leftover lamb meatballs with a pomegranate & mint yogurt sauce that Sean made for me last week. Auuuuuugh so good! Anyway, I tell you this mainly so that you don’t think I’m eating sandwiches for lunch every single day. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good sandwich (I channel some hardcore Joey Tribbiani during lunch sometimes), but I know how to change it up.

…Even though this post will certainly not seem to prove that point. Lulz. Anyway, here are a few snapshots of what’s in my lunchbag today, for those that are interested!

Untitled Untitled Untitled

A sandwich with ham, cheddar, greens, hummus, and mustard (thanks for the hummus tip, Heather!), a pineapple Chobani (my faaaav!), and a fuji apple.

Untitled Untitled Untitled

Leftover mashed taters from dinner the night before last (YES!), a sad little thing of string cheese, and a horseradish pickle I got at the farmer’s market which is AWESOME.

Untitled

And the most bestest best part, a red velvet cupcake from CakeLove. Kekekeke. (I love my portable cupcake holder, btw!)

Anyway, I guess some of you might be interested to hear how my reinvigorated bring-my-lunch thing is helping with my weight loss, eh? Well, let’s find out! I was recently sent a new scale from EatSmart scales to try out (they’re who sent me my last scale as well, and I have really loved it).

Untitled
EatSmart Precision Tracker Scale

This new scale is slightly smaller than my other one, with a really nice bright backlit display (though for some reason, the contrast of the numbers didn’t show up in this photo) and their same “step-on technology” that means you don’t have to touch it, then wait for the numbers to reset, then step on for real. It’s also a pretty fast read.

Untitled

My only real complaint is that the numbers themselves are kind of small on the display, especially in comparison to my other scale, the Precision Plus, which has ginormous numbers. (Sidenote: the first time I visited Sean’s apartment, I saw that we had the exact same scale. That’s twu wuv, people.) Not really an issue for me normally, but if I wasn’t wearing my glasses or contacts, I would have to step off and bend down close to see the numbers. The display on the Precision Plus scale are so big I can actually read them without corrective lenses… if I’m squinting really, really, really hard, hahaha. Oh yeah, I’m like, totally blind, by the way.

So! Right! Where were we? Oh yeah, weigh-in. Duh.

Starting Weight: 246 lbs
Last Weigh-in: 198.0 lbs
This Weigh-in: 197.1 lbs
Difference: -0.9 lbs

Whoo! The streak continues! Man, it’s almost like clockwork at this point, isn’t it? (And of course, by saying that, I am probably jinxing myself and will have gained 8 pounds back my next weigh in, hahaha). Just like last time, I’m not gonna focus on the one-pound-every-two-weeks thing as a negative. After all, if I’m able to keep up this average, I’ll have lost like, 30 pounds by this time next year! Which is beyond my goal, and who knows if things will accelerate or whatever (or decelerate again, haha).

I’m staying positive and just trying to tackle things one day at a time (and continuously making tweaks and revisions to my healthy habits, of course!) Here’s hoping I’m able to survive the holidays with maintenance… or maybe even repeat the glorious days of Christmas 2010 and actually still lose a pound or two through Christmas! We shall seeee!

Facing the Scale (Weigh-in)

Tempestuous.

That is the word that I would use to describe my relationship with the scale. Weighing myself is always a loaded experience for me. It goes beyond whether or not I will be pleased or displeased with the number staring back at me. More often than not, those blinking, back-lit digits will determine my feelings about life, the universe, and everything. How unfortunate it is that a 5-second revelation every Wednesday morning can leave me feeling elated or depressed, attractive or ugly, confident or feeling worthless.

Bargaining
Whyyyy?

I imagine that many other women feel the same way. I know several who have sworn off the scale for exactly this reason. Instead of letting a number validate their feelings, they prefer to judge their health via less rigid means: the way their pants fit, how they feel, how they look in the mirror. I don’t argue that this is probably the (mentally) healthier approach.

Unfortunately, I think that only works if you’re in a place where you’re already content with your pant size or how you feel or how you look. I’m not. I still want to drop another size or two, I don’t feel great about how I look all the time (though granted, I’m more and more content with it every day!), and I don’t have the self-awareness to know when I’ve gained weight based on my reflection (others may call it “denial”, hahaha.) As I’ve found from the past two months of delicious debauchery, steadfast scale-ignoring, and the subsequent weight that I’ve put back on, I am not in a place where I can forgo this particular frenemy.

IMG_9636.jpg

The fact of the matter is this: I need to weigh myself to know that I am making progress with my weight loss. When I’ve reached my goal, I can and will reevaluate the ways that I measure my health. Just like I don’t intend on counting calories forever (God forbid! Ugh.), I don’t think I’ll be weighing myself every week for the rest of my life. But, for now, while things are still in progress, this is simply how it’s gotta be.

thrilled

And so it shall be. As you may recall, my last weigh-in left me staring the stark realization of a 10-pound holiday weight gain. Boo. That said, I’ve been on point with my eating, and I even made it out for a couple of (painful) runs (the plan is in motion!) so let’s see how things measured up!

Starting Weight: 246 lbs
Last Weigh-in: 198.4 lbs
This Weigh-in: 194.2 lbs
Difference: -4.2 lbs

HUZZAH!! A great start to Weight Loss: The Sequel. A loss like this makes me think that maybe, just maybe, some of my regained pounds were water weight from the onslaught of salt and sugar I had been consuming? Well, even if at first glance that sounds like me being my usual, delusional self, the proof is in the pudding. And the pudding is a 4 pound loss! I am really pleased with this jump, and it definitely makes me feel optimistic about how things are going to go this year. I guess it just goes to show what a little clean eating and a few attempts at running can do, even after months of delicious awfulness!

And now, to continue all this fuzzy feel-goodery, let’s make someone else’s day! The random winner of the Hello Hydration giveaway is…

Congratulations, Lindsay! Shoot me an email and we’ll work out the details! ๐Ÿ™‚

What does your relationship with the scale look like?

Beach Countdown: 1 Week (Giveaway!)

Oh yes. Yes, my friends. In one tortuously long (but really, due to the holiday weekend it will actually be short) week, I will be lounging on the sunny sands of Ocean City. I can’t wait. I’ve been looking forward to a beach trip for what feels like FOREVER, and I’m hoping that my new found kinda-sorta bikini confidence won’t fail me now!

IMG_9162.jpg

In an attempt to look more kick-ass and less lazy-assed, I’m switching into HIGH GEAR MODE for the next 7 days (barring a few celebratory and patriotic food indulgences this weekend. I mean, come on. It’s 4th of July weekend!) I know there isn’t really that much I can expect to have happen in a week (guess it kinda snuck up on me, eh?) but I’m going to do what I can. I’ve actually developed an ab workout plan (what?!) based on what I learned at the running clinic I attended at the Fitness & Health Bloggers Conference in Boulder last weekend – namely, that you should be able to do as many reps as your age in years. I did it last night. It hurt.

Attention must be paid:

23 bicycle crunches
23-second plank (or in my case, modified plank. Heh.)
23 lower leg lifts (aka death.)
23 oblique crunches (on both sides).

Lather, rinse, repeat.

I intend on doing this every day (as long as I, you know, uh, can.) and working in my other daily activity as follows:

Friday: Run for 20+ minutes after work
Saturday: Walking to/in/from Farmer’s Market with Jenn (hey, better than nothing, right?)
Sunday: Run for 25+ minutes with my sister (I should probably tell her we’re doing that, eh?)
Monday: Family walk with, um, my family. (I should probably tell them we’re doing that, huh?)
Tuesday: Run for 30+ minutes after work
Wednesday: Bob Harper’s Yoga for the Warrior DVD
Thursday: Strength/stretch/panic

And then Friday I head to the beeeeeeeeach!

UGH. I already regret having written up this plan. I think I’m going to need your help to come up with some serious motivation here. And to reward you guys for doing that, I have a sweet giveaway for you! Hooray!

IMG_7508.jpg

Back in May when I attended the Fitbloggin’ conference in Baltimore, one of the sponsors at the event was EatSmart Scales, and I even came home with their new Precision Plus bathroom scale (much to my brother’s delight, as I was actually using the scale I had purloined from him before!)

IMG_9636.jpg

I honestly really dig this scale. Obviously, you know that this is a weight loss blog. And in order to determine that I am actually, you know, losing weight (or to determine that I’m failing miserably, haha) I weigh myself every Monday. It’s nice that not only is this a really sharp-looking bathroom accessory (super thin!), but you can literally just step on it and it begins. No tapping on and waiting for the number to zero out like most scales I’m used to. It’s a small thing, but if you’re like me and you just want to get your weigh-in over and done with it does make a difference!

IMG_9639.jpg

So I think you guys know where this is going. The awesome people at EatSmart have agreed to give one lucky winner a Precision Plus scale of her (or his! Don’t want to be presumptuous, haha) very own!

Ways to Enter:

1. Like EatSmart on Facebook and/or follow EatSmart on Twitter.

2. Sign up for the Monthly EatSmart Newsletter on their website.

3. Tweet/Post about this giveaway! Just make sure to reference @shrinkinggretch, @eatsmartscales, and a link to this post in your message (here’s a sample shortlink: http://tinyurl.com/3w5npxp).

4. Leave a comment weighing in with your opinion on, well, weighing in! Do you weigh yourself to stay on track? Why or why not? Are you a daily weigh-er? Weekly? Monthly?

So there you have it: multiple ways to enter, and feel free to just do one or do ’em all! Just leave separate comments for each, and a winner will be randomly selected on Wednesday, July 6th.

Also, for those of you who may be too impatient to wait for the giveaway to end, or are interested in buying a scale for someone else, you can purchase it through EatSmart’s affiliate link on Amazon. They also produce food and luggage scales, and EatSmart donates 100% of the profit they get from utilizing that link to charity!

Happy Fourth of July weekend, folks! See you on the flipside. ๐Ÿ™‚
