Viva Italiano!

Wow, you guys. Your responses to yesterday’s post really blew me away. You’re awesome, plain & simple, so thank you.

I have to admit, I was kind of a nervous wreck waiting for that post to publish! I wasn’t really expecting hostility or anything like that, but opening myself up like that, being that vulnerable… it made me nervous. I ended up having a rather melancholy weekend because of it (well, partly because of the horrible weather, and partly because I’m just crazypants. Ah well.) Luckily, I had something to look forward to last night! (Sidenote: whoever thought I’d be looking to Monday to make me feel better about the weekend?!)

Dinner with the fam at a local favorite: Argia’s! The ‘rents, the bro, and I were joined by our aunt & uncle who are in town for a couple of days.

I’ve mentioned Argia’s on the blog before, but just to remind you, it’s an Italian restaurant that specializes in family-style eating. We didn’t opt for that this time though, so everyone just ordered what they had a taste for. Argia’s, however, doesn’t seem to make too big of a distinction between their solo and famiglia servings. Portion size, schmortion size, right?

I tried to order thoughtfully so that I would neither regret nor resent my meal, so I went with seafood & a caesar. I know that caesars are not exactly the nutritious king of salads, but hey, at least it’s green, right? Of course, I ended up with the biggest caesar salad in creation alongside the amazing (and plentiful!) mussels. Lucky for my waistline weigh-in, Ben was more than happy to help me out with the massive amounts of food!

Dinner last night was actually Part 2 of my not-so-stellar weekend recovery plan. Part 1 was seeing 50/50 Sunday night – absolutely fantastic movie, by the way. I LOVE Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And Part 3?

Favorite Italian dish: go! Mine is ravioli, hands down. So many possibilities… so much awesomeness. If I had been ordering with reckless, delicious abandon, I’d have gotten the ricotta & goat cheese ravioli in butternut squash sauce that my dad ordered. Mmmm… is there such a thing as not-completely-fakey low-cal ravioli?

Zapped

I got zapped!

Last week I purchased a Groupon deal for 3 laser hair removal sessions (actually, I bought 2 deals – it was SUCH a ridiculously amazing discount!) and yesterday I went to my first appointment! Though I was totally freaking out about potentially searing off my armpit skin (gross, hahaha!) and being in immense pain, most of the people I talked to about it said that it really wasn’t so bad (my sister got her lower legs and underarms done a couple years ago and raves about it!) Verdict?

It was so not a big deal. Barely hurt at all (my left underarm stung a little for a few minutes afterward but that was it), and the technician, Stacey, who helped me was very knowledgeable and reassuring.

The laser machine is a little daunting to look at, but the only thing that you actually deal with is the little wand thing in the basket on the side of it in the above picture. The Esthetic Laser Clinic was very clean and nice-looking, although the location in an office park off of Gallows Road is a little bit odd. Regardless, it was about 3 minutes from where I work so I’m certainly not complaining! I’ll report in after another session to let you know how the actual hair loss is progressing — Stacey said that it’s normal not to see any change for a few weeks (and sessions are spaced 6 weeks apart) as your old hair is still going to grow out until it’s gone (but you can continue shaving like normal in between, don’t worry!)

Since I had gotten my underarms zapped and was advised by the technician to be aware of heat for the next day or so (just because heat can exasperate any swelling and itchiness that might occur) so i passed on hot yoga and decided to work out at home instead.

I also decided, however, that I wanted to continue on with the trend of beautifying myself and whatnot, and do a few at-home spa treatments. So how, you may ask, did I reconcile these two seemingly-opposite things?

Yes. That is right. I am not ashamed. I did arms, abs, and legs in a face mask. While watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager. And then I gave myself a pedicure. I am basically awesome. Also, please ignore the water marks on my tank top – I promise it isn’t sweat, it’s from washing my face prior to sweating (backwards…?)

Haaaaahahahaha. I’m so weird. But whatever! It worked! And then I felt good about myself when I went down to watch The Vampire Diaries and scream out in shock and amazement and fear every 10 minutes. Jeebus, that show is so awesome. Every episode it slaps you across the face with some kind of shocking revelation or character death or SOMETHING. Be prepared for another ridiculously excited Gretchen come next Thursday.

Moving on! So I am once again super excited about the lunch that I brought to work today. Behold! (Am I overusing the word “behold”?)

Breakfast, which is admittedly much less exciting:

An everything bagel thin (100 calories), some 1/3 less fat chive & onion (!!) cream cheese (70 calories/2 tbsp), and an apple (~80 calories). Delicious AND (sort of) nutritious! And for lunchsies:

Another gorgeous salad with romaine, red onion, avocado, strawberries, cherry flavored craisins, and cheese that is blue. I promise there’s actually a lot of lettuce underneath all that mouth-wateringness. Unpictured is another little container with 2 tbsp of my homemade poppyseed dressing like from last time. One of my tips for packing a salad for lunch, in case you’re interested, is to always pack it in a container that is a little too big. That way you can store your dressing in a baggy or container inside of the larger container, and then just pour it on and shake it all up right before eating!

Along with it I have two strips of mahi mahi that I had cooked up for fish tacos (which I had for lunch yesterday). I love fish! However, I will be honest in saying that this stupidly delicious fish is a main contributer to my ridonkulously high grocery bill from Tuesday, haha.

Plans for this weekend include potentially hitting up Whitlow’s on Wilson for my friend’s cover band Flow in the Dark tonight, then tomorrow is the Great Grapes Festival in Reston! It’s a wine-tasting festival taking place at Reston Town Center and a ton of wineries from all around Virginia come and set up shop for you to sample their vino. There are also a bunch of exhibitors and food stand (including Melting Pot! Eeee!) so you can sample their fare to your heart’s delight. I’m not a huge wine-drinker (not much of a connoisseur, I must admit) but who knows? Maybe that’ll all change after tomorrow afternoon! Now my biggest issue is whether or not to bring Daxter with me… ahahaha.

Have you ever tried laser hair removal? Would you consider it? If you have, what was your experience like? If you haven’t, what’s causing you to hesitate? For me, hesitation always stemmed from cost, because it really can be outrageously expensive. So take advantage of those Groupon and Living Social deals, my friends! You never know what’ll come up! Salmonariffic!

Oh man, oh man, oh man… food for today is SO awesome. One guess as to the main ingredient in both breakfast AND lunch today, hehehe. Behold! I finally went grocery shopping after literally eating myself down to my last grain of quinoa and anything that used to be living. Behold! Animal products are expensive!

I think that grocery stores just put the “Your Total Savings” thing in there to make you feel slightly less miserable about the exorbitant amount of money you just dumped into that annoying little habit of feeding yourself, haha.

I was very strategic about getting my groceries this time, too! Grocery listing is something I very rarely practice…

Naturally, I ended up still deviating from the list slightly, but it did help keep me a little more focused. Plus, since I was stocking up on so many staples and pantry essentials I was prepared to have my pocketbook drained.

Ah, Heaven. I’m back, my loves. 🙂

And I returned home poorer but happier that my fridge and pantry are stocked to the brim once again with healthy deliciousness that is going to propel me through these next 25 pounds. Hoo-HAH.

Well, let’s be honest. That fridge is never NOT full. I do share it with 4 other people. But you know what I mean!

Anyway, back to that amazeballs brekky and lunchsies (who am I?) I was talking about…

Return of the lox! I’m so happy to once again have this deliciousness back in my life. I’m still trying to use up the last of my Tofutti “Better than Cream Cheese” (60 cals/2 tbsp), so I smeared it on an Everything Bagel Thin (100 cals) and topped it with some smoked salmon (~120 cals/2 oz) and capers. 😀

CHOMP.

Since breakfast was the kind of meal you get sad about when it’s over, I knew that lunch would have to bring it, too:

First up, another amazing salad monster with romaine, red onion, avocado, strawbs, cherry-flavored craisens, and (of course) blue cheese. I also whipped up a big batch of homemade poppyseed vinaigrette last night since the creamy poppyseed dressing I love so much is a ridiculous 120 calories a serving! And don’t even get me started on that fat content. Sigh. My dressing is much, much lighter and is comprised only of red wine vinegar, canola oil (probably should have used olive but oh wellps), sugar, and poppyseeds.

And of course, the second component to this salmontastic day…

SALMON. Uh, duh?

It took me all of 5 minutes to cook up in a pan last night with some EVOO, first seasoned with soy sauce and sugar. I cannot WAIT to dig into this bad boy. Mmm, Omega 3s… so tasty…

Oh yeah, and there’s a mandarin orange for both meals:

Teehee.

Yoga tonight, since I took yesterday off to mow the lawn and clean my room and bathroom instead (all of which totally got me sweating, I’ll have you know!) I got these amazing new eco-friendly, natural cleaning products from an Etsy Vendor and so far I’m in love! I might have to pull a KERF and show off my mad cleaning skillz (ha!) at some point.

Are you a grocery-lister? Or more wing-it in the supermarket? I think that if I was better at meal planning ahead of time, I’d be better at shopping by grocery list. Maybe I’ll have a meal or two in my head before going, but more frequently I tend to go into the grocery and come up with meal ideas there based on what looks good to me at that moment. Which is why I should never go grocery shopping hungry!

Monday Weigh-in Time!

Hello friends. So I may or may not have been delaying writing this post as the results from this morning’s scalery are not super impressive. But alas, the hounding to get my butt on here to post my weigh-in (I still hear from people that they can’t believe I post my weight out here for the whole interworld to see, haha) so here we are. And here it is, sans fanfare:

199.5 lbs.

So, at least I’m squarely back in ONEderland (who else reads it as “oh-nee-der-land” after seeing That Thing You Do? Amazing movie!) with a half-pound loss. I mean, I’ll take it, for sure, but I guess I was just hoping for something a little more dramatic. I did get kinda salty over the weekend with my Good Stuff Eatery visit (totally worth it though!) But I thought that I was eating really well this past week otherwise!

I really embraced the whole Salad Beast concept this weekend, as evidenced by my Whole Foods lunch yesterday:

That’s a Mega Salad that includes romaine, red onion, beets, chickpeas, regular peas, bell peppers, and this awesome eggplant salad stuff on top. I also got a big ol’ hunkahunka tofu (and there may or may not be a li’l scoop of mashed potatoes and mac ‘n’ cheese in the back there… nobody’s perfect!)

I also tried to keep the ball rolling with today’s lunch:

That’s a bed of arugula and baby spinach, red onion, green bell pepper, craisens and blueberries. I drizzled a wee bit of EVOO, gave a squeeze of lemon and grinded on some salt and waaaay too much pepper. There was also a kiwi involved, but that was long gone before this picture was taken, hahaha. (I gave eating it the Anne P. a try — like an apple, skin & everything!)

I also embraced the whole green juicing phenom (though is it really a phenomenon yet?) not once but TWICE over the weekend!

Mm-mmm. 😉

Oh well. I still think I get an A for effort, so I’m going to give myself the mental satisfaction of saying I’m probably holding onto a little bit of water weight, hehe. I’m trying to keep up with the mentality that any loss is a good thing, and I realize that I cannot expect to be losing 2 or 3 pounds every single week. So here’s to positive thinking, and to next week (and the next pound off!)
