Sour Day

Today is just one of those days. You know the ones. It’s grey and icky and really, really wet out, and I clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed because my mood is just so sour today.

I haven’t been in a mood like this in a really long time–I don’t think any of you will be surprised to hear that generally I’m a pretty chipper person. I recognize that I have a pretty good life: a family who loves me, a boyfriend who loves me, two adorable schnauzers who I have to assume love me, if for no other reason than I’m the one who feeds them. I’m gainfully employed, I have a roof over my head, food in mah belly… believe me, I know there’s not a lot of foundation for me to Eeyore out on you all.

And the worst part is that this day really SHOULDN’T seem so bad! It isn’t like anything terrible has happened. I mean, sure, I got some disappointing news about my book, and the weather is blah, and I stayed up really late trying to write last night but only managed to eek out about 100 words, meaning I feel like I’m tired today for nothing. But, I mean, c’mon. Suck it up, Gretchen. Far worse things are happening in the world. Worse things have happened to me in the not-so-distant past (anybody remember catastrophe week?).

Unfortunately, knowing all that on a cognitive level doesn’t really do much to boost my mood. Logic and emotion? They don’t always work in conjunction with each other. Since I can’t think my way out of it, I gotta figure out some other way to pick myself out of this slump. I’m thinking I might need to spend some time with Taylor’s fake-sunshine lamp when I get home from work today.

Okay, enough complaining. Sorry for going all doldrum-dweller on you guys. I promise tomorrow I’ll be back with some actually interesting content (well, interesting to me: oil cleansing!) and stop with the whiner baby act. čÖé

What are your go-to mood-lifting methods?

The Little Things

On days like yesterday, when the weather is dreary…

Dreary Day

And you’re sick at home, yet again

And you’re still a passenger on quite the emotional ride

And you’re feeling like you might be stretching yourself just a little too thin…

You have to focus on the little things.

Nutcracked Coffee

Like the barista spelling your name correctly.

Snuggle Buddy

And puppies snuggled in blankets.

Puppy Paws

And puppy paws, more specifically.

5 More Minutes

Sometimes you have to focus on the little details so you don’t get overwhelmed with the big picture. You have to take a step back, take a breath, and reboot. Or at least, you need to try.

What’s one little (or big!) thing you’re trying to focus on right now?

Dreary Morning Overnight Oats in a Jar

Good morning my friends! It is d-r-e-a-r-y in Falls Church this morning, let me tell you. All my metro DC peeps – I feel your drizzly, gray pain.

I guess I should be grateful that it isn’t raining the torrential downpours that I’ve been hearing about all week, but nonetheless, it’s still kinda icky outside. Needless to say, there are a couple of puppies that were NOT all about having to go outside this morning, hahaha.

To add a little pep to my step and whatnot this drizzly, grizzly day, I have an empty jar of peanut butter that I’ve put to good use!

Yes, my loves. It’s oats in a jar. Specifically, overnight oats in a jar.

I realize that when I make oats in a jar, it looks about as appetizing as my foot, but it does taste good, I swear! It probably doesn’t help that I used chocolate almond milk this time instead of regular, thus adding that one extra layer of brown-ness… oh well. I added chia seeds to the mix for the first time and I think I may have gone slightly overboard. There are more chias than oats in this particular batch!

I’ve been weirdly jonesing for vegetables lately. Yeah. I know. Who am I?! I think I may have finally gone over to the dark side (or, rather, the light side. Like, literally. You know… ’cause it’ll make me lighter? Get it? Anybody? Well, at least I think I’m funny.)

In order to take advantage of said vegetable craving, I passed on bringing Sloppy Gretchen mix for lunch for the second day in a row, and opted to throw together a SUPERFAST healthy little salad (inspired by Anne P.’s 5-minute packable lunches, I now know that exactly how much time it takes to throw together something healthy in the morning: 5 minutes!)

In the mix we’ve got some greens (dur.), red onion, sliced strawbs, and diced red bell pepper. I love me some color! And, of course, in true obsessive-Gretchen-fashion, I threw some chia seeds on top. Y’know. For garnish. čśŤ

I also threw together a 30-second (seriously!) vinaigrette maid with meyer lemon juice, olive oil, salt & peppah.

Snacks include:

Some Annie’s Spelt Pretzel Bunnies (they’re so cute, heehee.)

And a kiwi! Huzzah for healthy!

Question: What are your favorite quick & healthy lunches to bring to work? I often find that my downfall is if I don’t have any leftovers in the fridge to easily take, I just give up and say I’m gonna buy lunch instead (today is clearly a rare exception.) And when I buy lunch even if my intentions are to stick to the salad bar, we all know what’s gonna happen. Ideas are welcome! čÖé

Rain, rain, go away

Well, I woke up feeling a bit better today, despite a slight relapse last night, so hopefully things really are on the up and up! I actually made it to work on time this morning, which is a novelty this week, although the driving situation getting to work these past few days hasn’t been exactly magical:

Someone in the office got my hopes up and said that it’s supposed to be sunny later around mid-day today, so we’ll see! I remain cautiously optimistic. It’s not that I’m a rain-hater, by any means. I kind of like rain. It’s just that when you’re sick, and it’s raining, and it just generally looks gross outside, and you have to contend with other drivers when it’s raining (for some reason, a little precipitation and all driving ability seems to vanish for some people!) it’s just not a winning┬ácombination.

In other news (or rather, related to the original news) I’ve been successfully able to keep down my dinner from last night, and I am starving this morning. My sister says that being hungry is a good sign, so I’m taking that as her blessing to eat my lunch at 8:28 AM (which I may or may not but definitely am doing right now.)

Also, my beloved puppy Daxter decided that rain is totally not his thing. Therefore, he only deigns to stay outside for 30 seconds in the morning, and then comes inside to poop in the kitchen. ::shakes head:: Why does he have to be so darned cute so I can’t even be mad at him?

Oh, the trials and tribulations of (pet) parenthood. He starts puppy obedience school on the 10th, so I have high hopes for him! Maybe he’ll come out of it being as perfect a dog as Harry (or perhaps perfecter! Hehe.)

I hope everyone has a good weekend planned! Mine is entirely too jam-packed – including a retirement party for my Papa! It will be a challenge to get back on track with food after this week of being sick and not caring. Especially if I’m thrust into a party/buffet situation. Guess this will be a good test of me being able to get back on the wagon! Err… off the wagon? I can’t remember which one actually applies. Oh well. Until next time, party people!

Update [12:30 PM]: The rain really has gone away!! It’s gorgeous outside now… at least until it rains next time.
