Marathoner

No, not me, of course! My brother-in-law, Dan, completed his first marathon on Saturday at the DC Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon! My sister also finished her second half-marathon. While I may have given up on long-distance running for now, as you can see, there are clearly still a couple of running rockstars in the family!!

Sean and I made it into the city to spectate the end of the race and cheer Dan on at the finish line. It was HOT on Saturday! I felt so bad for the poor runners who trained in the winter cold only to have to fight against the sun on race day. A big congrats to everyone who ran the race(s)!

After everyone had a chance to cool down and rinse off, a group of bloggers, runners, and readers gathered at Continental Pool Lounge in Rosslyn. Despite a little hiccup where I was late for the very meetup I organized, it was a lot of fun getting to catch up (however briefly) with people who I hadn’t seen in forever, as well as meeting new fellow occupants of the blogosphere!

I love it when my internet life and real life collides. Though, I should state, this is not an invitation for someone to start stalking me, hahaha.

Sean got full points for not only putting up with so much family stuff earlier in the day, but for being willing to brave a blogger meetup in the first place, haha. Oh, our poor friends, family members, and significant others… ;)

We unfortunately didn’t get a group shot while everyone was still there, but near the end one of the servers at Continental was kind enough to offer to take a picture of those of us who remained. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I see some of these cats again… especially, as I realized, a lot of us live here but never actually meet up unless there are bloggers coming in from out of town, tsk, tsk. I think that happy hour meetups will need to become a regular occurrence! ;)

While we’re on the subject of those who live locally, I hope that you’re getting out to see the cherry blossoms this week! I heard on the radio this morning that tomorrow is actually going to be their peak day (they’ve bloomed crazy early this year!), so I would hightail it out to check them out before they’ve all blown away! The chances of them still being around for the Cherry Blossom Festival (and 5K/10 Miler) in two weeks is pretty slim, after all. Sad. In case the idea of all those pretty blossoms blowing away is seriously bumming you out, here is a picture of Daxter with a sock on his head:

Social Whirlwind (Weigh-in)

This week is crazy. I love it, but it’s crazy. I literally have something to do and someone to meet up with every single day this week. And I am by no means complaining — not at all! — but five straight days of social eating and drinking (more than that, if you count the weekends on either side!) is certainly not the norm for me. And given this morning’s post-Super Bowl weigh-in, it’s not doing me any physical favors either. (Emotional health is on the up and up though!)

Sangria

Last night was a two-fold social celebration, starting with happy hour with my dear friend Lara! We went to Chef Geoff’s in Tysons, which despite it being a fairly upscale restaurant, had some pretty good happy hour deals!

Superbeer

Check out the size of her beer! Superbeer, indeed. We also got some extremely healthy appetizers to nom on while we caught up — wings & fried pickles. Heh.

IMG_4024IMG_4022

Not content to have those kind of nutritional goldmines (ha!) comprise my entire dinner, a couple hours later I went to dinner with Ben, his girlfriend Taylor, my roommate Erin, and my new manfriend Sean (who yes, I’m sure you’ll be hearing about in more detail later. ;)) And where did we go for dinner?

IMG_4028IMG_4026

I mean, do you even have to ask? Koi Koi, of course! Just can’t get enough.

IMG_4032

For once, we actually ordered an appropriate amount of sushi for the five of us and I didn’t leave completely overstuffed (because you know that if there is sushi in front of me, I am going to eat it — full or not). Still, the sodium from the soy sauce and edamame, paired with Friday’s book club, Monday night’s decadent dinner AND the Super Bowl SnackFest 2012… well, we all knew that this week’s weigh-in wasn’t going to be particularly inspiring.

Starting Weight: 246 lbs
Last Weigh-in: 192.4 lbs
This Weigh-in: 192.6 lbs
Difference: +0.2 lbs

But! It wasn’t as bad as I was honestly expecting! Huzzah! (It’s the little victories, y’know?) I’m probably holding on to quite a bit of water today, so my goal will be to drink lots of water, flush out my system, and check back in on myself in a couple of days to see if it’s made any difference. Hopefully it will have, and by next week I’ll be another pound or so down! That said, if my social life keeps being as active as it has been (and I sure hope it does!) I’m going to need to figure out some new ways to be social that don’t necessarily include mindless calorie consumption. Maybe I’ll have to instigate an at-home happy hour policy where we cook our own healthy apps, haha!

What are your suggestions for things to do with friends that don’t orbit around eating out?

Scion DC

I am on a happy hour roll lately. I seriously think that I’ve participated in more happy hours in the two months since starting my new job than I had in the rest of my (still relatively short) working life combined! And last night I got to continue the trend at…

Scion

Scion! I really enjoyed this new-to-me Dupont Circle restaurant, despite being constantly reminded of my brother’s car the entire time I was there (a Scion TC – doesn’t my post title seem clever now? Hahaha.)

Specials!

The happy hour specials aren’t quite as good as they were at Cafe Asia, but the beer selection was good! And the waitstaff was great — I know, because I ended up hanging out with them for the better part of an hour while waiting for the rest of the gang to arrive, haha. At least you can’t say I’m not punctual?

Beer me
Luckily, I had some good company to wait with, hehe.

And before I knew it, Tina, Gina, and Leslie were there!

Tina & Me
GinaAnd her little dog too

The three of them are in town for a ridiculously awesome DC food tour, which included a visit to the What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam? exhibit at the National Archives that I still haven’t made time for. Shame on me! We were also joined by Linsday, Katie, and Katie (heh), who I didn’t want to freak out too much, so I didn’t force them to pose for a picture.

SpringrollShrimpies
Fried Pickles

The seven us split ALL of the happy hour special appetizers. Fried food galore! I was in heaven, especially with the fried pickles. These were perfection! Light and crispy, like little amazing pickle chips. Mmmm.

Croquette

The shrimp was my second favorite, followed by these little croquettes. There may or may not have also been fries. So much for that whole back on track stuff, eh? Bahaha.

Despite my less than stellar week weight-wise, I am actually feeling pretty good going into this weekend. I don’t really have anything in particular planned yet, which can be risky since boredom eating is a definite weakness of mine. That being said, I think that a low-key, low-stress weekend is just what I, well, not need, but want. You know, to “reset” my system and cleanse myself of all this bad weigh-in karma. I have several fresh, healthy meals in mind, am planning on another trip to my beloved Farmer’s Market, and I might even attempt going out for my first post-5 miler run! (Say whaaa?)

Are you a stay-busy-weekend or be-lazy-weekend person? I usually like a good mix of both (busy Saturdays, lazy Sunday, natch.) Lately my weekends have been so jam-packed though, that I especially relish the weekend bumming. Whatever your weekend style may be, I hope you have a great one!

PS: If you have a second this weekend, pop on over to What Katie Said to wish her good luck. She’s lost SEVENTY pounds and is running her first half-marathon on Sunday! Rockstar, much?!

Sushi Hour

Since “sushi” is pretty much synonymous with the word “happy” in my eyes, I think this post title totally works. So it’s probably no surprise then that after last night’s third DC blogger monthly meetup I am the sushiest gal around.

Maki
Heaven.

I met up with Jess, Carly, Claire, Catrina, and Amy at Cafe Asia in Rosslyn for happy hour last night!

I tried to ration out my eating properly throughout the day since I know I just can’t help myself when it comes to sushi. Turns out that was a very good call…

I had never been there before, but Cafe Asia’s happy hour is pretty fantastic. $2.50 draft beers and $3 apps! The space was really big too, so it was easy to move from the bar to a table when we realized there would be just six of us.

After we were seated, we settled in for the main event. I decided that it would be a good idea to eat an entire avocado for dinner, so I started with the following “salad”:

IMG_1325.jpg
There’s some shredded cucumber and wakame buried under there too, I promise.

Before moving onto this deliciousness:

NOM.

Claire had the fancy dragon roll on the right as well as the tuna roll, and I demolished the salmon, eel & avocado, and “Cafe Asia” roll on the left. I wasn’t kidding about the amount of avocado I consumed today. Totally counts as a “green”, right?

And as if my day wasn’t sushi-tastic enough, LivingSocial had a deal today for 50% off of sushi at Maneki Neko in Falls Church! I’ve always considered them to be “the other” when it comes to FC sushi (my loyalty lies with Koi Koi now and forever!) but hey, with a deal this good I’m definitely willing to broaden my horizons!

What’s your sushi stance? I find it’s a very polarizing cuisine: people either love it or hate it. It’s clearly no secret that I’m part of the former category, but some of you might be surprised to hear that Steve really doesn’t like it! I’ve finally gotten him to the point where he’s at least willing to take me to sushi restaurants though (where he’ll order the teriyaki chicken, haha), so I guess I can’t really complain. Doesn’t stop me from trying to force him to eat it anyway though. LIKE IT. LIKE IT, I SAY!
