Fashion Friday: Work It

Whew. We made it! My legs still don’t work, but we made it to Friday! Let the weekending commence!

To ease you into your weekend after what can be referred to as the heaviest (no pun intended) post I’ve ever written, here’s a fashion post. Hooray?

I hadn’t really posted any work-appropriate outfits yet, so I figured that since I actually put some effort in yesterday it would be a good opportunity to showcase the kinds of stuff I wear to the office. It was really nice outside, so I made my friend & coworker Rachel take pictures of me right outside of a federal building where I’m sure I didn’t look ridiculous at all.

Especially not when I essentially stripped. I’m so glad she caught this on camera.

Oh well. Worth it? Obviously while at work the cardigan stays on for the most part. But it was hot and sunny and I wanted to show off how cute this LBD is so I made the decision to shed a layer temporarily.

And of course, no Fashion Friday would be complete without an awkward look-how-candid-I-am totally un-posed (ha!) shot. But can I just take a second to talk about the camera on my new iPhone 5? I used to loathe posting pictures with my phone, but as I am lazy, I don’t enjoy toting my DSLR with me absolutely everywhere. I mean, a phone camera will always be a phone camera, but I’m still pretty impressed. But if you were wondering why all my photos are not quite up to par lately, that’s why.

Anyway, here the outfit deets, just in case you were curious. I got almost everything on sale, so unfortunately I can’t find links to most of the products anymore. But with the kinds of places that I shop, generally similar things are always in rotation anyway.

LBD: Old Navy
Cardigan: New York & Company
Shoes: Payless (comfiest flats ever, btw, and they come in a few different colors)
Belt: Forever 21
Sunglasses: Armani Exchange (birthday gift)
Necklace: Gift from sister
Bag: Kate Spade

It’s too bad I don’t do Fashion Saturday posts, since tonight I’m going to a costume party for my freshman roommate Joanna and her twin sister Aileen. It’s actually their birthday today! Personally, as you all know I am OBSESSED with my own day o’ birth, I cannot imagine being forced to share it with anybody. Not even someone with whom I also shared, you know, the womb. (I may or may not have already threatened Jenny’s pregnant belly that if her baby is overdue and encrouches on my birthday month — she’s due at the end of March — there will be some seriously ‘splaining to do.)

The party is Mean Girls-themed (!!), and since Aileen and Jo showed up at my own (Harry Potter-themed) birthday party in some pretty fetch costumes (a golden snitch and Dobby the elf respectively — see above), I figure I owe them at least a moderate effort. Right now I’m thinking about going as a “Cool Asian“. Unless anyone knows where I can get a purple tuxedo at the last minute.

Have a great weekend!

Fashion Friday: Red Lipped Lovah

Here is a statement that will shock you to your very core: I love clothes. I love looking at them, shopping for them, buying them, and yes, even wearing them. I just am really a very typical girl in that way. Fashion is one of my (many) passions! I mean, I basically started this whole series just so I have an excuse to take pictures of my clothes. I love fashion and I’ve got the store receipts and backlog of Vogues to prove it.

There is, however, something that I love more than playing dress up, buying new clothing (especially now that I actually sometimes like how I look in them!), and generally ogling designer duds that I will never, ever, ever be able to afford. Makeup. I love how it can transform us, perfect us, and allow us to express ourselves in endless ways. My sister is often bewildered at my intense passion for putting tons of crap on my face, since I definitely didn’t learn it from her. In fact, beyond her high school fashionista days of wearing dark lipliner with light lipstick (hey, it was the 90s!), she doesn’t really wear makeup at all. I just got her to start regularly wearing mascara!

To be fair, I don’t actually wear a ton of makeup every day either. It’s very rare that I’ll put on my full face (foundation and all that jazz), since I’ve been blessed with relatively clear skin for most of my life (except, of course, when I need to take super close-up shots of my face, sigh). But I do my eyes up almost every single day, and in general I just love the possibilities that makeup provides. You can go from doe-eyed beauty to sultry vixen to glamorous rockstar all with just a few brush strokes. And as I’m sure the saleswomen at Sephora can attest, I take this particular passion of mine quite seriously.

I think that in another life (or maybe still in this one!) I’d be a makeup artist. I love doing my friends’ makeup for them, and will actually be putting my skills to the test at Anne’s wedding in October when I do the makeup for her bridal party (one of whom is my sister, so I guess that doesn’t really count).

Even with my self-proclaimed love for making myself up, however, I still have my hangups. I’m really not much of a lipstick gal. In fact, before this year, I never regularly wore anything on my lips aside from the occasional gloss. I’m now trying to branch out and try different things: stains, lipsticks, and the like (thank goodness for BirchBox!) but I’m still a bit shy when it comes to bold lip looks. With one exception, of course.

The red lip.

I have got a serious ladyboner for red lips. I don’t know if it’s because of my not-so-secret desire to have been born in the 1950s or simply my devotion to the the originator of fabulousness herself — Marilyn Monroe — but I just love it. Like, in an I-am-going-to-rock-a-red-lip-on-my-wedding-day way.

While I used to confine the red lip to nights out with my manfriend or a particularly fancy event, I’ve recently come to the realization that iconic glamour like this knows no boundaries. I wore a daytime red lip to work yesterday and got tons of compliments. When wearing such a bold lip, I keep my eyes super-dee-duper minimal. So I’m bringing this particular look right to you, in both daytime- and nighttime-appropriate looks:

Since this is a rather picture-heavy post, and I’d like to save myself the humiliation of having endless photos of MYFACE! on the front page of the blog all weekend long, simply click past the jump to see more!

Fashion Friday: Scratch

So I think I probably jumped on this colored jeans trend about 3 months late, but hey, better late than never, right? I scored these teal skinnies online for almost half-off though, so I figured what have I got to lose?

I actually think that these jeans would look awesome with some closed-toe pumps, but as I’m still recovering from Wednesday’s CrossFit session, I couldn’t quite stomach the idea. So t-strap flats it was!

Jeans: Dorothy Perkins
Shirt: Forever21
Tank (underneath): H&M
Shoes: Target
Watch: Fossil (similar, similar)
Flippin’ sweet mustache Necklace: Gift from my sister

This outfit, while being pretty standard weekend wear for me, actually had a very functional purpose. It was to partially hide the horrific scratch marks that Daxter left on my chest. Evidently he did not appreciate the way I scooped him up earlier.

Please ignore my super redface; it was like a zillion degrees.

He is lucky he’s so fracking cute, that’s all I gotta say.

Have a great weekend!

Fashion Friday: Bridal Shower

I love pretty much any reason to get dressed up. For a concert, a date, a wedding, or one of the many precursors to a wedding: the bridal shower!

As you already know, I attended Anne’s wonderful bridal shower (thrown by her bridesmaids including my own sister, her maid of honor!) last weekend. It was definitely a classy affair so I was glad to have this Jessica Simpson dress on hand. I purchased it on Amazon back in March, but hadn’t had an occasion to wear it yet! I especially love that it came with the belt, which is removable and fully-adjustable so I can wear it with other things, too.

Evidently I’m really feeling yellow right now. In the past few months I’ve bought not one, but two yellow dresses, a yellow tunic-style top, and a pair of neon yellow sandals! Not sure what’s in the water, but I’m definitely digging it. You just can’t help but feel all sunshiney and bright when you’re wearing a color like this, y’know?

Dress: Jessica Simpson on Amazon (same dress still available in different colors)
Shoes: Classiques Entier (similar, similar)
Penelope Necklace: Stella & Dot (similar, similar)
Logo Hobo: Coach
Nail color: China Glaze Beauty & the Beach

Sean and I are off to see Iron Sky tonight, a movie about Nazis from the dark side of the moon. Sounds like a winner to me! 😉

Have a great weekend!

Fashion Friday: Amazonian

I’ve mentioned before that I’m finally starting to take control of my height. I stand at a not-outrageous-but-certainly-in-no-way-petite 5’9″. That’s 69 inches, or 175 centimeters. I am not short. And as being a, well not-short person, I’ve always found myself battling between my love of footwear and my desire to not seem like an Amazon. My mom and my sister both clock in at under 5’2″ (as does my future sister-in-law, Taylor) and my ex-boyfriend hated when I wore heels (he is 5’10” and evidently insecure about it). So for most of my life, I stuck to flip flops, flats, and the dreaded (and totally unflattering) kitten heel.

Well, not anymore! I refuse to relegate myself to cute but unremarkable footwear any longer! Yes, it does help that Sean stands at a perfect 6’1″ so I don’t have to worry about Nicole Kidmanning his Tom Cruise, but it’s more than that. I think it boils down to a confidence thing, too. Being tall means you stand out, right? Literally above the rest. And for a really, really long time, I didn’t want to stand out. Because standing out meant being The Fat Girl. I wanted to blend right in. Well, screw that. I don’t want to blend in any longer. I just want to be me.

And I am both 5’9″ AND I also love shoes of all heights. I am an equal-opportunity shoe lover. So there.

Sweater: Target
Pants: New York & Company
Harry Potter Book Page Necklace: Pretty Little Charms on Etsy
Zella Wedges: Sole Society

Whenever I wear more of a statement shoe, I try to keep everything else pretty color neutral. I also wanted to prove that yes, I do wear pants, not just dresses! Truth be told, though, I will always prefer dresses over pants + top. Coordinating tops and bottoms is a lot of work, haha.

Feeding my current shoe obsession is Shoe Society, a website where they have totally adorable shoes that are constantly rotating. They release a new style every day, and only appears to keep a style until it sells out. They are SUPER reasonably priced (I think the most expensive pair I’ve seen is a pair of boots at $69.95) and so far the quality seems good. Free shipping both ways, too. I’m not a spokesperson for them or anything (although I think that quite a few real fashion bloggers are), I just really like the concept. And the colors. And the price point. Also, if you sign up through my link and end up buying a pair, I get more monies to spend on shoes!

Good things I have all this high-heeled confidence now, eh? 😉
