Change Your Diet, Change Your Results (Guest Post)

Hi folks! Apologies for being AWOL this week, but as you know, I’m up to my ears in daily Yelp events for my big Passport to Mosaic marketing promotion, so time’s been a little tight lately. But for those of you who are itching to get their eyes on something new, I have a guest post from Andrea Singer with IHM today!

So without further adieu, I’ll let her take it away with her tips and advice for changing your diet to see better health results!

—————

I am a firm believer in nutrition. I think we spend too much time looking at what we “can’t” have, and not enough time thinking about all of the great foods we can eat and still see results.

For Weight Loss — Watch Your Macros

Cutting out entire food groups is not the answer for weight loss. It may help you drop a few pounds initially, but it is generally not sustainable. Once you go back to your normal habits, you gain all the weight back.

Instead you might have better luck counting your macronutrients — calories, carbs, proteins, and fats. That way you hit all of the major nutrients, but can create an overall calorie deficit which will allow you to lose weight and enjoy small treats that might otherwise be “forbidden”.

There are programs like IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros), or if you need more structure, the HMR Healthy Solutions program is a low-calorie nutrition plan that allows you to enjoy all of your favorites in moderation.

For More Energy and Strength — Time Your Nutrition Better

Night snacking is a common mistake in weight loss. It’s not a terrible thing if you eat past 8pm, but you will have better results if you eat the majority of your nutrition during the daytime. Eating too much too late can also make it more difficult to fall asleep, and whether you are trying to lose weight, gain strength, or both, a good night’s sleep is vital to either.

What you choose for breakfast may make or break your nutritional success for the day. If you start out with sugar and refined carbs your insulin will spike and crash, setting you up to become hungry more quickly and make poor choices later on. Starting your day with protein and fats, however, will give you steady energy throughout the morning.

You should also plan on eating around your workouts. Eating a combination of carbohydrates and proteins an hour or two before working out can help you perform better and work out longer, and eating a similar combination within half an hour after working out will help your muscles recover.

For Everyone — Don’t Fear Saturated Fats

For optimal strength and energy, try starting your day out with proteins and your saturated fats in the morning — a few eggs cooked in coconut oil or a hamburger patty with vegetables would be good choices.

It has been long thought that saturated fats have negative effects on your health, but new studies are showing that that may not be the case. Saturated fats can keep you fuller for longer as opposed to carbohydrates, and assuming that it is a part of a healthy diet, can aid in weight loss and building strength.

In weight loss, what we eat is very important, but how much we eat is important as well. Knowing how much of which nutrients will help you reach your goal no matter what you are looking to do, and considering adding in more fats might help both for weight loss, and to increase energy.

The Good, The Bad, and the Crazy

My big, huge, spectacular, monstrosity of a promotion — Yelp’s Passport to Mosaic — is almost upon us, which means that with each passing day I have somehow become even crazier than I already was. Impossible, I know, but here we are.

Yelp's Passport to Mosaic!

I am SO excited for this thing to kick off, because logically I do know that it’s going to be awesome and that the majority of the work is already done. HOWEVER, I think we all know by now that logic is not exactly my strong-suit, and thus every other hour in the day is peppered with a mini-panic attack over the fact that I’m trying to pull off EIGHT events in SEVEN days because dude, that is a lot. In a good way. But still.

The Good:

RSVP response for all of the events has been really good (I hope some of you in the area are considering coming out for one or two!), and we’re getting some good media promotion out of this! A lot of the logistical stuff is being totally handled, like managing RSVPs, communicating with the business owners, and getting things printed. I also spent three hours yesterday afternoon literally going door to door over at Mosaic just to make sure everything was hunky-dory with participating businesses.

The Bad:

Swag bags, man. Every time I do an event where there are gift bags/swag bags/individual gifts of some kind, I always swear I’ll never do them again. After all, they are painstaking and time-consuming to put together AND incredibly difficult to transport… and yet, here we are! My Elite Event on Sunday is the big kickoff for the entire week, so I wanted to do something to make it feel really special. And since I already had so many awesome businesses interested in participating in the promotion in general, a lot of them also wanted to contribute something! Plus all the awesome Yelp schwag that we’ve got going on to start (can we say Yelp luggage tags? So cute!) So really, it is awesome, because these swag bags are gonna be too legit to quit, but at the same time, it means that tomorrow afternoon, my intern Lendsey and I will be packing swag bags until the end of time. Eep!

The Crazy:

Remember all that awesome media coverage that we’re getting for Passport? Well, included in part of that is the fact that I’M GONNA BE ON TV!! AHHHHHHH!! That is totally the definition of crazy, is it not? Let’s Talk Live DC has asked me to come onto their show and talk about Passport. It’s my first TV spot, so I’m obviously just a liiiittle bit nervous. But it’s that kind of super excited, shaky nervousness that will hopefully translate into me seeming REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC about this promotion. Which, I am. So hopefully that’ll all work itself out.

So make sure you watch me make a fool of myself on live TV — Monday, 3/31 on News Channel 8! (808 in HD.) The show airs from 11 AM to 12 PM. Eeeeeeee!

Though some of the nittier, grittier parts of this promotion still have yet to be completely ironed out, I guess that when I really sit down and take stock of everything I’ve done, and everything I still have to do, things aren’t quite as overwhelming as I thought. So basically, just the simple act of me writing this post has worked wonders on my mental stability. Which is good! Because while I’m sure that my weigh-in on Friday will be totally awesome this week, I’m not sure that being unable to eat from stress is the way to achieve my weight loss goals, hahaha.

And on the plus side, going on TV Monday means I have a legit excuse to get my hair redone! I’m actually going in this afternoon… anyone wanna take guesses on what color I’ll come out with today? Heheheheh.

The Past 4 Months, As Told By My Hair

WARNING. WARNING. PHOTO OVERLOAD APPROACHING.

So actually, after publishing that last post, I realized it’s not really fair for me just to pop in with a hi, hello, here’s a new recipe, kthxbye, now is it? I mean, you guys need CONTEXT for what I’ve been doing for the past few months, don’t you? Well, even if you don’t, I’m going to give it to you, so there. After all, You’re up to date on the fact that I got LASIK back in October (it’s AWESOME, in case you were wondering), but other than that, I’ve been terribly lacking in details. Well, here’s a brief recap! Fair warning, though my life is like 85% Yelp now.

Powell Family Reunion over the summer

My friends Lara’s and Aileen‘s weddings in September!

Visiting my sister and niece in Macon, GA in October

Yelp’s HallowMEME Elite Event at the State Theatre for Halloween (can you guess which Hipster Disney Princess I was?)

Briefly met celebrity chef Mike Isabella in November (spoiler alert: we did NOT become best friends and he’s kiiiind of a dbag…)

Carly + Alex Leaves

Shot engagement pics for the enchanting Carly and her fiance, Alex

dad 60th-005

Threw a superhero-themed birthday bash for my dad’s 60th cakeday!

And, most recently, threw Yelp’s Ho-Ho-Holiday Party Elite Event!

Oh, and just in case you haven’t been able to see in these photos, or haven’t been keeping track via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, here is a specific timeline of what my hair has gone through over the past few months. Because I like to have a chronicle of these things, and also since, you know, that’s what this blog is REALLY all about. ;)

I feel like the last time I checked in on the coiffure-front might have been when my hair looked like this:

Buuuut that was back in… August. Soooo, eventually all that blue-pink-purple hotness faded out, and I ended up finding a new hairdresser/soulmate in Linh from Be Scene Hair Studio in Bethesda. And back in early October, he turned my punked out, turned up hair into this:

Mmmm, ombre…

Of course, as I’ve now had a taste for the wonders of dramatically colored hair (and because I can get away with it now due to my rocksome job with Yelp), eventually I had to have MORE.

So now my hair looks like this:

HAHAHAHAHAHA, just kidding! That was just phase one in getting it to look like THIS:

Oooor, if you put me in a photobooth at a Yelp event and turn the flash on, it looks like I’m wearing a ridiculous purple wig:

Bahahaha.

Regardless of what particular shade it looks like in whatever the current light situation is, I love it, love it, LOVE IT, and I’m pretty sure I’m never going to stop. Now, that said, I’m taking suggestions on what color I should go for next. I mean, it’s kind of big decision, trying to figure out what shade should I end up kicking off 2014 with! So feel free to leave a comment with your choice du jour, and have an amaaazing night.

Ben & Taylor Wedding Preview

I was going to do a little mini-recap of the wedding now that Ben and Taylor’s photographer has posted some photos on her blog, but I decided it would probably be best if you guys just headed over there to see the beautiful pictures! I’m definitely still planning on recapping my big brother’s most special day (there may or may not be some videos of me performing involved…) but for now, check out Kate Ignatowsky’s post!

I’m Back, Baby! (Giveaway!)

EDIT: This giveaway is now closed. To see if you were one of the winners, click here!

Ohhhhh hey guys. Long time no see/talk/read. Well… I’m back! Yep, back from Houston full of adorable baby memories and a huuuuge backlog of work to sift through, heh. Technically I got back on Saturday, but I’ve pretty much been playing catch-up since then. (Also, there has been some major snuggling with Harry since he didn’t get to make the trip with Daxter and me.)

Getting to spend the week in Texas with my sister, her husband, my parents, and my brand new baby niece was amazing, but it may surprise no one to hear that it wasn’t really a vacation in the traditional sense. Nope, up by 7 every morning, helping to change poopy diapers, and watching a LOT of TLC (okay, well, that part was pretty vacation-y, heh), I almost feel like I need a vacation from my vacation! Alas, that won’t be happening (at least not until Sean’s and my epic Ireland trip in July!) but at least now I’ll be back on a (hopefully) regular blogging schedule.

Part of my going down to Houston was to do a newborn photo shoot with baby Amelia! I’ve only just started editing some of the photos, but in case you haven’t already seen these plastered all over social media (and apologies if you have, hehe), take a look!

mia awake

mia asleep

jen and mia

She is the most alert and curious baby when awake, and soooo freaking adorable when asleep. Of course, not every shot was a winner…

crying mia

I honestly think this one might be my favorite of them all, hahaha. Anyway, like I said, this is only a preview of the gazillion photos I still have yet to edit (seriously, I took almost 300 shots! Hahaha) but I thought you might like to see proof of the one productive thing I managed to do in Houston. :P

Speaking of Houston… so. My sister, who some of you may already know works for UnderArmour, sent me home with a smorgasbord of UA goodies. One of the things I was sent back with is an exclusive collection of awesome UA headbands!

They look really great AND are super functional for working out. They feel nice but are grippy (without tearing out hair or anything horrible like that). Even though my hair is super straight and sleek, they really don’t slip very much! This particular pack comes in really fun blues and greens. I get compliments on my UA headbands ALL the time when I wear them, and I want you guys to experience the same!

Giveaway time!

I’ve got FIVE (yes, five!) packs of headbands to give away to you guys! To enter, simply leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite thing about Spring is!

As always, extra entries for those who follow me on Twitter, Like HISTG on Facebook, and tweet/post about this giveaway. Just make you sure you leave separate comments back here for each thing you do! I’ll pick the winners on Friday, April 5th.

Note: This giveaway is not sponsored in any way by UnderAmour. I just have the good fortune to get freebies through my sister, and know I’m not gonna need 20 more headbands to add to my own collection, hahahaha.

Happy April!
