They Grow Up So Fast

Happy MLK Jr, Day/Inauguration Day, everyone! I have the day off here in DC for both of those reasons, but if you’re stuck at work today I definitely sympathize. Of course, today is also important to me because it’s a very important day in dog world too: Daxter’s birthday!

Clean Daxter

So yes, feel free to roll your eyes at the fact that I’m the kind of person who celebrates dog birthdays, but also, I mean, you really shouldn’t be surprised, hahaha. My little pupster is a whopping THREE YEARS OLD (sniff, sniff, they grow up so fast!) and it shall be duly celebrated. While Harry rolls his own schnauzer eyes in the background (he turns 9 in April!).

Hehe. I’ll be back tomorrow with a smorgasbord of pictures from the baby shower that I threw for my sister (it was super adorable and OH SO VERY PINK), but for now, enjoy your day! I know Daxter will definitely be enjoying his. :)

Dogs like Yogurt too?

The Everyday Perils of Dog Ownership

Ahh, Monday.

Truly, nothing says “Welcome to the work week, biotch!” like being woken up by your dog puking on your carpet three times in the middle of the night. After he’s already made a onesie AND a twosie on your bathroom floor (but I do appreciate that he goes into the bathroom to do it, at least!). Yes, Daxter got me off to a grrrrreat start this week. Sigh.

My suspicion is that when Daxter gets sick like this it’s mostly anxiety-related. Which is kind of sad, because he has no real reason to be anxious. Ever. Seriously, between my brother’s and my work schedules, the dogs are left alone for maybe like, 3 hours a day — if at all! Not to mention they’re pretty much the most spoiled things ever. But between Daxter’s recent penchant for pooping on bathroom floors and Harry’s new allergy developments (he is so itchy ALL the time! I feel so bad for him. Anyone have any homeopathetic dog itch-relief remedies they want to share?), my little schnauzie-poos are definitely a handful right now.

Let me disclaim: I didn’t actually put Daxter in “jail” for puking. I just thought these pictures that Taylor took a few months ago were particularly apt.

As always, they are supremely lucky they’re so gosh-darned cute.

Anywayyyy, instead of dwelling on all of that literal mess, let’s look at some pretty pictures of sushi, shall we? I met up with my friend Amanda on Friday and we took a trip to my beloved Koi Koi. I actually had already had sushi earlier in the week, so I didn’t end up getting my usual sushi smorgasbord. Just a chicken katsu dish (which was so delicious I forgot to take a picture) and a little salmon roll on the side.

Plus edamame, duh.

Amanda Instagrammed her own deliciousness, so I took a photo of her taking a photo. I’m so meta.

I hope that you all had wonderful weekends! See you on the flipside. :)

No Beard, No Problem!

I have a lot of breed loyalty for the miniature schnauzer (um, duh), and one of the things I love most is that they don’t shed. This means less vacuuming for me (huzzah!) and fewer allergic reactions for everyone else (double huzzah!) Their hair just grows and grows, like people hair! That does mean, however, that grooming can get rather tedious. Also just like people, my puppers require regular haircuts to keep their fuzz from getting totally out of control.

The bad part is that a trip to the groomer can cost anywhere from $60 to $100 PER dog! So, in seeking out another alternative, you may already be aware of the fact that I occasionally take Harry & Daxter’s grooming into my own hands. While in the beginning this had borderline disastrous effects

Whoops.

…I’ve actually gotten fairly decent at it lately!

This time, though, I wanted to try something different. Something that my mom probably won’t actually be too happy about, since she’s kind of obsessed with Harry’s beard. Good thing hair always grows back, on schnauzers and humans alike, eh?

IMG_9304.jpg
IMG_9290.jpg

Presenting… the beardless(ish) schnauzers! I chopped off their beards so now they’re both left with what’s more like the schnauzer equivalent of 5 o’clock shadow. Daxter’s actually had his beard almost this short in the past (kind of), but this is a first for Harry. I actually think it makes them look really sweet!

IMG_9301.jpg

Ben, however, thinks it makes them look like rats. I feel like it makes Daxter look more like a puppy again, and makes Harry look a lot younger, too. Of course, he’ll always be a crotchety old man in spirit (and personality) anyway, so there’s only so much that a haircut can do, ahahaha.

IMG_9309.jpg

I’m not sure how the two of them feel about their new haircuts though. Eating and drinking is already a much better experience for me, since less food is getting stuck in their beards and less water drippage is occurring, but they both seemed a little gloomy while I was taking these photos of them.

IMG_9289.jpg IMG_9312.jpg

Perhaps that’s just because they’re totally sick of having cameras shoved into their faces. And to be fair, they were a little on the sleepy side too.

I rest my case.

Anyway, I think it’s pretty stinkin’ adorable, but we’ll see whether or not this becomes the norm. At least I have the adorableness for now! And through me, you have it as well. You’re welcome. ;)

CaR(n)age

Yeah, I was trying to do some sort of clever play on the words “Car”, “Rage”, and “Carnage” for the title of this post, but that didn’t really work out as smoothly as I would have hoped. Oh well, since ultimately this will be but a tiny blip on the life-consuming radar of The Internets, I’m not going to sweat it too much.

I originally intended this post to be all about my hoarding ways, and the means in which I intend to rid myself of them. I’m determined to seriously edit the massive vacuum of STUFF that is my bedroom currently, and wanted to talk about that. Alas, I am a little too ragey to go into the specifics of Stuff Purging right now, so that will have to wait.

I’ve been living through a rather unfortunate bit of deja vu since last night. Remember how my car decided to give me a giant middle finger the night before my birthday, and I spent said birthday in the waiting room of a Sears Auto Shop with naught but my iPhone to keep me company? Well, I got to do it ALL over again when my now still-brand new battery decided to die on me last night. 6 jump starts and a totally unsurprising amount of tears later, I got to spend my entire morning waiting around for my sad, old Chrysler to be fixed.

At least this time I had company. Adorable company.

I’m looking to get a new (used) car sometime in the not-so-distant future anyway, so my biggest concern was having to dump hundreds and hundreds of dollars into a car that I won’t be driving for long. The mechanics were tossing around concern about the alternator, which I know from past experience (oh, 1987 Honda Prelude, you served me well… kinda) can cost $500+ to replace. Fortunately, the automotive gods took mercy on me this morning and it only ended up being a small post terminal that was all rusted and corroded. $2.99 for the part, $40 for the labor and installation, and I was back on my way. Hopefully this time it sticks!

Okay, thanks for sticking around through my vent sesh, friends. To end on a happy note, here are a couple more pictures of my puppers. They’ve been gracing this blog far too infrequently lately, don’t you think? NEED MOAR SCHNAUZERS!

Proof of Run

Oh hey!

Untitled

I actually followed through with (the first day of) a workout plan for once, whaddya know? Yesterday evening, I met up with my lovely friend Joy for a nice 3-mile jaunt on the bike trail. My ankle was giving me some grief after a while, so it ended up being more like 2.5 miles ran, .5 mile walked or so, but still! We maintained a really good pace (er, for me) while running too, which was quite novel. The weather conditions were pretty perfect, too — breezy with the sun still peeking out as it set.

Untitled
FEED ME.

My legs do admittedly feel a little heavy today though (so pathetic, haha), so I’m actually kind of glad that I have Zumba tonight to work ‘em out a little bit. All the jumping and bouncing we do in those classes really works my hamstrings… which is a very good thing as it turns out. Due to a little last-minute race leg change-up, I’m now the first runner in the relay. While I’m totally STOKED to kick-off the relay and absorb all that awesome starting-line energy (one of the things I love most about racing), it also means that my first leg is going to be straight uphill for an entire mile. I know. I KNOW. Just thinking about it makes me want to do this:

IMG_6771.jpg
Just bury me under these pillows and go on without me, team.

But alas! I’m going to rock it out, and the (literal) mountain shall indeed be conquered! I intend on switching up the 3.5-mile treadmill run I had originally planned for tomorrow and replacing it with a 1- or 1.5-mile incline run instead, along with some weight-work perhaps. I’m just going to crank the tready’s incline up to 5 and see how long I can last, hahaha…ha…ha.

In other news, look at Daxter’s hilarious face!

IMG_6776.jpgIMG_6781.jpgIMG_6783.jpg

And that, as they say, is that. Random? Maybe. But I really couldn’t think of a smoother transition, and I felt the need to share his adorable mug with you all today. Don’t even try to say you don’t love it just a little bit. :)

Have a great tolerable Tuesday! (Since Tuesday is by far the absolute worst day of the week, I feel it would be wildly presumptuous to think that anyone could have a “great” day today, hahaha.)

PS: I’ve got a Daily Eats post coming your way in a few, too! SHOCK! Who am I?!
