What does “healthy” mean to you?

My concept and perception of “health” has changed dramatically since starting this journey. Being “healthy” used to be all about the end-result for me: goal weight, goal size, etc. I now truly believe that being healthy is all about making the effort — the journey, rather than the destination if you want to embrace the cliche.


What is your dream job?

Corny as it is to say it, I have my dream job! Working for Yelp as a Community Manager draws on every single thing I love: people, writing, events, food, local businesses, all right in my favorite area in the world: Northern VA! I’m very fortunate to be able to do something that I love every day.


What foods can you absolutely NOT eat?

I am very fortunate not to have any food allergies or very severe intolerances. That being said, after not consuming cow’s milk for a long time (I prefer the taste and calories of almond milk) I’ve developed a degree of lactose intolerance. Yogurt and cheese seem to be okay, but milk and ice cream now have a terribly, er, uncomfortable effect on me (gross, hahaha.) Sad!

Is everyone supportive of your healthy ways? Did you have any friends who weren’t on board with any changes you made when you starting getting healthy?

I’m fortunate that I don’t have anyone in my life that has been flat-out unsupportive of my healthy journey. That being said, there are definitely different levels of understanding when it comes to the blog and how necessary I feel it is for my continued progress. I also feel like there are certain people who, not by any fault of their own, made the beginning of my journey more difficult because of the lifestyle they themselves lead. It can just be challenging to be the one to abstain when you have friends that encourage you to have “just a slice or two.” But in the end, the responsibility falls upon my own willpower (or lack thereof, haha.)

How do you gauge how many calories to eat? A program? Trial and Error?

As I detail in one of my Weight Loss 101 posts, I determine my caloric intake based on my basal metabolic rate (BMR). I try for a deficit of about 500 calories a day, so I aim for around 1500 calories.

How has having lost so much weight affected you mentally?

Mentally I am in a strange place. I have some issues not seeing myself as “the fat girl” anymore, even though logically I know that I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight. When you’re the one seeing yourself in the mirror every day, it’s just harder to recognize, I guess. Hopefully this is something that will reconcile itself in time, but for now it is admittedly still a struggle.

What has your biggest struggle been in your journey so far?

My biggest struggle has been (and is) between my former self and my current self. It is a constant battle whenever I get low, angry, stressed, or bored not to revert back to my old ways and turn to binge eating and my previously toxic relationship with food. I honestly think that despite the progress I’ve made to heal from that, it will still be something I have to fight against for the rest of my life. It’s hard to undo habits that you have ingrained in yourself for pretty much your entire life, you know? But at least I know now that I have the confidence to at least try. And that goes a long way.

What kind of camera & lens do you shoot with?

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mk III and a 50mm 1.4 lens. Also, my iPhone 5.





Sushi! Duh. But beyond that, I’m an equal opportunity food lover.

Nut butter?

Cashew butter is actually my favorite, which I like to make myself! As for the store-bought kind, Justin’s Maple Almond Butter has a very special place in my heart.

Go-to snack food?

Apples & peanut or almond butter is always a solid choice for me. If my salty tooth is acting up instead, I like to grab a bag of Popchips for a quick fix.

Ice cream flavor?

I’m a pistachio girl all the way.


  1. Recognizing and accepting that this IS a lifetime struggle and journey, but one that has substantial rewards is the biggest victory of all. Very impressed!

  2. Re: not having any food intolerance — what you just described (GI grossness) *is* lactose intolerance, love. It occurs in varying degrees (I can also do cheese + yog, but no milk or ice cream). Welcome to the club πŸ˜€

    (Most people are lactose intolerant and just don’t realize it (e.g. think a lot of gas is their “normal”) or will not really see it until they actually cut dairy out, then try it again – that’s how I found out too!)
