Fashion Friday: Lady in (Too Much) Red

So I was all set to do yet another holiday fashion post for you all, focusing on what I wore for Sean and my big cheese-y Melting Pot NYE date. Since, you know, the holidays are a pretty fabulous time to get all fancy and take advantage of my extreme vanity. (You know, the kind of self-obsession that propels me to post photo after photo of myself during these so-called “Fashion” posts every couple of weeks, hahahaha.)

But as I opened up Lightroom to edit this batch of portraits, something struck me. A pretty intense wave of deja vu. Almost as if I’d seen something oh-so-similar before.

But where? Where, oh where, could I possibly have seen this before?

Oh yeah.

And oh yeah… and yeah.

And ohhhhh… yeah…

Haaaaaaahahahahahahaha. Okay, just one more, I promise:

Granted, this picture is from my sister's wedding in 2008, but I just thought it helped make my point nicely. Plus, recognize anyone familiar in the wedding party? Hehe.)

So, yeah. Kinda taking that whole lady-in-red thing literally, am I not? I’m thinking this is probably a trend I should take a break from. Embrace some of the other wonderful colors in the spectrum, you know?

Back when I was in high school, I made this sweeping declaration (since you all know how much I do love to make sweeping declarations) about how my signature color was going to be orange (mainly because every other girl I knew was obsessed with pink and I wanted to be different), so I made a point to wear an item of orange clothing, or an orange accessory, EVERY SINGLE DAY THEREAFTER.

Unsurprisingly, there are very few photos of me from back when I was in high school readily available on the interwebs (remember when we only had ONE computer for the whole family to share?! Oh, those were dark days indeed) but if you look closely at this random picture from, oh, I dunno, 2002? that I found on Facebook, you can see my super sweet orange Hawaiian-patterned halter top buried under my sister's head.)

Shockingly, there are very few photos of me from back when I was in high school readily available on the interwebs (remember when we only had ONE computer for the whole family to share?! Until, you know, I came to my senses… eventually.

2005. I still have that jacket.

2005. I still have that jacket.

Thankfully, that obsession with having a signature color has faded, but OBVIOUSLY there are still certain colors that I tend to gravitate towards more than others. I’ll work on broadening my color horizons for my wardrobe’s sake though, promise. (And in other news, that is probably the most vapid-sounding thing I have written/spoken/thought in a long time, hahahahaha.)

Are you/have you ever been the same way? Do you have a favorite/signature color — whether it’s purposeful or accidental?

  1. Hiya! I just wanted to tell you I really like the long hair! And the dress in front of the Christmas tree! Classy!

  2. You look good in red!

  3. Red is a great color on you Gretchen! I just cleaned out my closet this weekend and realized I wear a lot of gray and navy and black/white combos. Like half of my closet is colorful and the whole other half is variations of gray/navy (I swear, it’s like I’m a mailman)…I actually own 4 different shades/styles of gray cardigans. Embarrassing.

  4. You wear it well!
My ‘color’ changes every year. A couple years ago, it was dark hot pink, then blue, now it’s gravitating towards purple. I don’t know what causes it, but I’m just thankful I’m out of my ‘black’ phase–that was no fun.

  5. Black, definitely. Sometimes I could be mistaken for being in mourning.

I also wear a lot of other dark colours like dark green, navy blue, or gray.

I’m trying to branch out a bit, but most of my wardrobe is still in these colours

I think I only have 2 red things in my entire closet.

  6. When I was in high school, there was this one kid whose mother chose orange as “her thing.” She was always wearing orange, from clothes to coats to hats. It was awful! And she often accented it with purple, orange hats with purple ribbons and whatnot. Orange is a perfectly nice color but perhaps only in small doses. You look wonderful in red, keep it up!!!

  7. I love it! I definitely went through an orange phase as well. Now I’m a bit more balanced, but I still refuse to wear blue and purple!

  8. You look too cute in red. I love the holiday dress in front of the Christmas tree. :)

  9. I love, LOVE LOVE that BCBG Max Azria dress. And holy moly, can I be super creepy and say that I’m super jealous of your chesticles? Me and my A cups are green with envy.

    :)

    • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL not creepy at all. LOVE IT. :D

  10. Ahhh I love all the red! I would love to own 1,265,215 red dresses. I always gravitate to black with a pop of color. Today, for instance, I’m in black pants, black turtle neck and a black/grey/blue poncho. It’s quite elegant with my sparkly bedroom shoes I accidentally forgot to take off before coming in. ;)

  11. Red and purple for me! I think the red obsession is an Aries thing!

  12. hahahaha well it makes sense you gravitate towards red! It looks fantastic on you. I’m the same way with navy blue. Not necessarily my favorite color, but I wear it alllll the time just because it looks good with my skin tone and hair :P

  13. At the moment it’s a teal blue – I have at least three work sweaters, a couple tee shirts, and three workout shirts. Before this it was burgundy. I tend to go through color phrases every couple/few years. Some shade of blue is a recurring one.

  14. Hey Gretchen! Just wanted to stop by and congratulate you on writing your first book! I’ve fallen off the blogging wagon since getting pregnant and being oh-so-sick but I found out through Lauren @ Oatmeal After Spinning. You’re clearly living the dream – congrats and best wishes!

    • Thanks Hilary!!

  15. This past spring I learned that I look awesome in coral and decided its my color so I try to buy it whenever I can. While I don’t wear it all the time, i am wearing a coral tee AND sweatshirt today.

  16. I used to wear waaaaay too much black, so I’ve really branched out and started wearing lots of navy blue. ;-)

CONGRATS on the book by the way! Such an incredible accomplishment.

  17. My Grandmother has told me over and over that I need to add some color to my closet. Most my clothes are black, gray, or navy.

  18. Perhaps it was my year as a retail clerk at Target that has caused me to avoid red like the plague!

I do gravitate towards purples and blues, but over the past few years I’ve been mixing it up more and more.

Actually, orange has become a favorite color though, sadly, I don’t have as much orange in my wardrobe as I can handle. Need more orange! (Just bought an orange sweater at JCP today.)

  19. If you look good in a colour – rock it! You suit red – though that orange jacket is great! I guess black is my signature colour if that counts. In high school I refused to wear almost nothing but black, even dyed my hair black, except for red lipstick, so that kind of became my signature, I guess. I was super cool.

Also, I swear I know that girl in your last photo. Or she just has an identical twin in Canada. Haha.

    • She’s from Canada! That pic was taken in Ottawa! Oh my gosh, this would be the smallest world ever if you actually do know Soleil.

  20. Blue is my color. And purple (thanks JMU). And my sister says I wear stripes too much.

And every dress I own is black. :/

I’m going to try and branch out more this year too.

  21. lady you look fabulous in red :) :)

navy is my color – 2/3 of my dresses are navy. The other 1/3 is black. Often I have the same dress in both navy…and black. Originality, I haz it?

  22. In junior high, I used to wear lime green every day. And no, with my pale skin, it is NOT a flattering color. Fortunately I now gravitate towards the pinks and purples, which are much more appropriate for my skin tones, but I like to hide any and all photos from those years!
