Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

I’ve joked in the past that this blog could easily be called “The Many Haircuts and Colors of Gretchen”. I change my hair often and, much of the time, quite drastically. Short, long, brown, red, blonde, bangs, side bangs, no bangs… I’ve pretty much done it all. Here is just a small (ha!) photographic sampling of some of the hairdids I’ve had in the past. Because, you know, really the main point of this blog is to provide catharsis for my vanity. Ahahahaha. πŸ˜‰

Where my complicated relationship with bangs began… keke

Looooong and au natural

Looooong and definitely NOT au natural (but super fun!)

Chin-length and highlights

Bangs McCoy

Blonde pixie!

Red is rad

And so on, and so forth.

I’ve always been of the mindset that hair is the very best thing to fool around with if I’m feeling restless about my appearance. Unlike tattoos and piercings, changes that you make to your hair are still just temporary. I mean, it’s just hair, right? It grows back.

Anyway, all of this is really just a lame build up to announce that I’ve dyed my hair again. I’m pretty sure it’s undeserving of an announcement, actually, but it’s Friday and this is pretty much all I got. I am actively trying NOT to cut my hair (growing it out for my brother’s wedding next Spring!) but I really needed a change up. Plus, the roots situation of my last dyejob was getting kind of out of control.

It’s like the ombre roots trend except not well executed and actually awful.

The color is supposed to be a burgundy-ish brown, but looks much more purple right now than I had intended. Not that I mind, since purple is awesome, but it will fade as I wash it anyway. Except for when I went blonde last year, I almost always use at-home coloring kits (I like Garnier Fructis) to dye my hair. Salon coloring is SO expensive for something that I pretty much view as an experiment. I’m probably still going to do something to these weird growy-outty bangs that are happening but perhaps I’ll save that for another day when I need some more blog filler. πŸ˜‰

I hope everyone has an amazing weekend! Mine includes Miss Anne P.‘s bachelorette party (a wine tour like we did for my sister’s 30th birthday!) as well as her 30th birthday party afterward. Wooo! It’s actually her birthday today, so make sure to pop over to her blog and wish her well!!

  1. Sounds like you change your hair about as often as I do mine!

    • Must be what all the cool kids are doing! πŸ˜€

  2. I always change my hair when I’m in a funk. Bleached pixie…I was in a bad place. I LOVE your long and natural look.

  3. Lol πŸ™‚ I love changing my hair. I had short hair for so many years that now I’m going a bit crazy and growing it out, and I don’t know when I’ll stop letting it grow! Ok ok, I still get haircuts cause I’d die of embarrassment if I had too many split ends and stuff.

I had red highlights (similar to your not so au natural one :P) and loved it… tempted to do it again if I can find someone to do it for me, for free, cause I’m cheap.

  4. Love the new colour, but I’m biased as mine is very similar right now. I intentionally bought a boxed colour called dark purple.. it’s not very purple unless i’m in the sun though. I dye my hair all the time and I’ve only been to the salon twice.. if I ever do something drastic then I’ll likely go to the salon, but I don’t see the point when the boxes work just fine for what I do πŸ™‚

    • My thoughts exactly! $8.49 box of hair dye or… $150 tinfoil highlights? Not really much of a competition, hahaha.

  5. Love your hair story!! I always do at-home color, but I never do permenant, I usually do demi-perm which lasts 28 shampoos. I’m a scaredy cat lol. But I like the purple on you a lot! It’s a great color for fall!

  6. One of the few blessings of living in a small town in the midwest: cheap hair color. I have really, really long hair that takes two batches of color and with a cut and color is around $60.
I have what can be classified as hair cutting phobia so I am so jealous of your daring hairstyles. I’ve had the same one for about six years. I love your purple color!

  7. I love, love, love the color!

  8. I have had every cut, style and color in the book and truly, one of the hardest parts of pregnancy has been limiting my treatments! Having said that, I laugh every time I look at the series of pregnancy progression pictures I’ve taken since I was 7 weeks pregnant because it has changed a LOT and I style it differently every week πŸ™‚ Getting my hair cut today, too!

    • Hahaha oh gosh. I guess I’d better make sure my hair situation is in check before I start trying if/when I decide to have a baby then! I can’t imagine myself wanting grown-out roots in what post-birth hospital pictures that will already be straining the definition of “attractive” for me, bahahaha. PS: I AM SO EXCITED FOR LI’L BUG!!!

  9. The hair looked great in person! Hope it wasn’t super weird to stop you outside the Big Cheese truck to say hi πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Amy! Not at all!! I’m so happy you did. πŸ™‚ We need to tell Julie about this awesome coincidence!

  10. I think I love your blog so much, because you are SO LIKE ME. I always tell people I would probably never get a tattoo, because it’s too permanent. I can just dye my hair when I want a change! Love all the different hair styles though. Super fun.

  11. See you tomorrow!!! πŸ™‚

  12. my favorite style is the short hair style. looks good!

almost as good as the different hair styles are the different faces made in each picture!! πŸ™‚

  13. I’ve definitely done my fair share of hair color changing (and by that I mean highlights, blonde, dark brown, black and au natural) but ever since I cut my hair short (and the hair dresser cut it EVEN shorter than I asked) and hated it, my hair stays long. So much so that I’m afraid to even get a trim…

  14. Haha, I totes agree with you, hair is hair! It will continue to grow and you can change the color πŸ˜› I’ve donated my hair 3 times over the past few years… Let it grow and dramatically chop it all off! I don’t think I can out-do you in the frequency of change-ups but I def love a new look for spring/ fall!

P.S. You’re rocking the purple and I think you look beautiful in the pic with the “long and au natural” hair!

  15. haha you and me both, sister. i am trying to grow mine out but i’m itching to cut it all off (a la emma watson 2010).
