Fashion Friday: Red Lipped Lovah

Here is a statement that will shock you to your very core: I love clothes. I love looking at them, shopping for them, buying them, and yes, even wearing them. I just am really a very typical girl in that way. Fashion is one of my (many) passions! I mean, I basically started this whole series just so I have an excuse to take pictures of my clothes. I love fashion and I’ve got the store receipts and backlog of Vogues to prove it.

There is, however, something that I love more than playing dress up, buying new clothing (especially now that I actually sometimes like how I look in them!), and generally ogling designer duds that I will never, ever, ever be able to afford. Makeup. I love how it can transform us, perfect us, and allow us to express ourselves in endless ways. My sister is often bewildered at my intense passion for putting tons of crap on my face, since I definitely didn’t learn it from her. In fact, beyond her high school fashionista days of wearing dark lipliner with light lipstick (hey, it was the 90s!), she doesn’t really wear makeup at all. I just got her to start regularly wearing mascara!

To be fair, I don’t actually wear a ton of makeup every day either. It’s very rare that I’ll put on my full face (foundation and all that jazz), since I’ve been blessed with relatively clear skin for most of my life (except, of course, when I need to take super close-up shots of my face, sigh). But I do my eyes up almost every single day, and in general I just love the possibilities that makeup provides. You can go from doe-eyed beauty to sultry vixen to glamorous rockstar all with just a few brush strokes. And as I’m sure the saleswomen at Sephora can attest, I take this particular passion of mine quite seriously.

I think that in another life (or maybe still in this one!) I’d be a makeup artist. I love doing my friends’ makeup for them, and will actually be putting my skills to the test at Anne’s wedding in October when I do the makeup for her bridal party (one of whom is my sister, so I guess that doesn’t really count).

Even with my self-proclaimed love for making myself up, however, I still have my hangups. I’m really not much of a lipstick gal. In fact, before this year, I never regularly wore anything on my lips aside from the occasional gloss. I’m now trying to branch out and try different things: stains, lipsticks, and the like (thank goodness for BirchBox!) but I’m still a bit shy when it comes to bold lip looks. With one exception, of course.

The red lip.

I have got a serious ladyboner for red lips. I don’t know if it’s because of my not-so-secret desire to have been born in the 1950s or simply my devotion to the the originator of fabulousness herself — Marilyn Monroe — but I just love it. Like, in an I-am-going-to-rock-a-red-lip-on-my-wedding-day way.

While I used to confine the red lip to nights out with my manfriend or a particularly fancy event, I’ve recently come to the realization that iconic glamour like this knows no boundaries. I wore a daytime red lip to work yesterday and got tons of compliments. When wearing such a bold lip, I keep my eyes super-dee-duper minimal. So I’m bringing this particular look right to you, in both daytime- and nighttime-appropriate looks:

Since this is a rather picture-heavy post, and I’d like to save myself the humiliation of having endless photos of MYFACE! on the front page of the blog all weekend long, simply click past the jump to see more!

All right, first things first. Because I want to literally put my best face forward for you folks, I did do the whole foundation kit and caboodle. For me, that means the following:

NARS blush in Orgasm
Smashbox highlighting wand in Pearl
Makeup Forever HD Primer in green (redness control)
Makeup Forever HD Foundation in #128 (mixed with a little white moisturizer because I am le pale right now)

There we go! Ah, so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. The only thing I’m missing is a little concealer for those undereye circles I’m rocking (because I don’t own concealer… which I probably should do something about). Note: I use very little blush because my cheeks get red very, very easily all on their own. So if my face looks kind of dimensionless, it’s because I simply haven’t gotten overheated/excited/sad/happy/hungry yet.

Step 1: Line the lips. Take a self-portrait in which you look very angry.

IMG_9505.jpg

Step 2: Fill in the lips with liner. Try not to smirk when taking your picture and fail miserably.

IMG_9507.jpg

Step 3: With your FINGER (or a lip brush if you’re fancy like that), dab lipstick on over the liner. Apply lightly and smudge into lips, adding more as you go until you reached your desired intensity. Finish eyes with two coats mascara (curling optional).

Step 4: Clean up around the edges with a tissue and blot. Ta-da!

IMG_9509.jpg
Just ignore the crazy eye. She won’t hurt you. Probably.

The night look is all those exact steps with just a leeeeetle something extra.

Step 1: Touch up lipstick (if needed), and apply lip gloss (any shiny gloss will do, it doesn’t have to be a matching red color).

Step 2: Trace line on top eyelid with liquid liner, flaring out into a cat eye if desired. Add another coat of mascara. Done!

Now there’s no reason you can’t wear a red lip around the clock, should you want to. By filling in your lips with liner first, you are helping to prevent fading. I’ve heard other tips like dusting with powder after one coat of lipstick, then adding another (which I’m sure does work), but that seems like a lot of work and I have no problem reapplying a little if need be.

Have an amazing Labor Day weekend, everybody!

  1. Nars’ Orgasm blush is the best! It gives me that extra little boost of color and glow on my cheeks. :) I used to make that compact last for awhile, but I had to replenish mine within six months this year! I wonder what gives?

    • It’s the blush I recommend to EVERYONE. I seriously think it’s flattering no matter what your skin tone!

  2. Red lipstick is my secret weapon. On days when I oversleep or I just can’t get my sh!t together, my makeup routine is simply concealer, mascara and red lipstick. It makes me look put together when I’m really …

    NOT.

And, as your photos prove, it’s a gorgeous look. Smooches!

  3. I just have to comment on the fact that you used the word “ladyboner.” That made my morning.

    • I’m seconding the “ladyboner” comment, and placing my vote for more makeup posts. And for pictures of all the girl faces at Anne’s wedding so I can c&p them onto my bridesmaids’ faces.

  4. I like the red lip look but when I try it on myself I find it a bit too dramatic.

Also I think your face is gorgeous without any make-up. Probably more gorgeous than made-up.

    • It definitely is a dramatic look, and the red I use is also a particularly RED-red. There are more brickish/orange-y shades that are a little more subtle, I think, but I’m of the “go big or go home” mentality most of the time, haha.

Also, thank you! You make me blush. :)

  5. Jealous! I’m helpless with makeup. And red would just look terrible on me. On you, beautiful.

Btw, I get that one eye winky thing if I smile to big too. It drives me crazy. *Sigh*

  6. Yay for a makeup post. I am obsessed with makeup and excited to see a post about makeup on your blog!

  7. I LOVE makeup forever’s foundation! It is seriously the greatest.

  8. I like! My coloring doesn’t allow me to look so hot with red…boo that! But I do like lipstick. I’ve been using Mary Kay’s clear lip liner and I loooooove it. (I remember we both have a love for MK) It really helps keep things in place.

  9. You look adorable with red lips! I unfortunately look like a five year old who stole her mother’s makeup. And I love the eyeliner.

  10. Bahaha Love this post! Ladyboner. And I totally have a crazy eye. No biggie.
