So. Maybe this borders a little too heavily on the whole “TMI” side of things (though let’s be honest, when have I ever been really one to stray away from a good TMI scenario?) but I have got to say: I have raging PMS right now. My 2.8 male readers can promptly close their browsers now. Really, it’s okay guys. 😉

PMS is one of those things that is incredibly inconsistent for me. Some months, things just chug along like normal. Maybe I end up with a couple more french-fry cravings than normal, but it’s never anything noticeable enough for me to be like, “Oh, I must be PMS-ing!” It’s usually just more like, huh, I want some french fries.

Other months, however, it hits me like a freight train. I do recognize that I’m pretty lucky in that I don’t often get hit with major bloating, death-inducing headaches, or the like. No, the worst thing for me is the emotional damage that my hormones have on me. It’s not so much mood swings as a general rise in my emotional sensitivity. And considering I’m not the most emotionally stable person on a regular day… oooooh man.

Case in point:

Yep. Twilight made me cry. And it wasn’t even during like, a sad scene (to be fair though, is there such a thing in Twilight?). You might think that would be the height of my PMS-related patheticness, but you’d be wrong. I still vividly remember the time I started crying while watching High School Musical.

As Sean can attest, there’s also not a small amount of general moping and doldrum-dwelling for no real reason:

“What’s wrong?”

I know, I know. I’m that girl. I’m sorry. (Not really.)

Because I don’t really experience many other signs other than my inappropriate allocation of emotions, I do sometimes find that my diet goes through a bit of an unconscious rebellion at a certain point each month. Like with the aforementioned french fry craving, I know that my willpower to resist (or perhaps limit would be a better word, since you know I’m not a fan of totally ignoring a craving) my inhalation of fries is definitely lower. Sometimes I feel like I should start tracking these things better so I know when I’ll need to mentally equip myself against the pull of a junk food rage, haha.

Does PMS hit you hard? In what ways?

I’m on some weird back and forth where some months I have AWFUL cramps but no emotional issues, and then other months I’m an emotional mess (crying, angry, depressed) but with almost no physical symptoms. I guess it’s better that it’s not both at once. I do always have crappy food cravings though.

  2. I hear you, Sister. I get SO hungry and emotional! BTW/TMI – I started using a diva cup. It’s amazing.

  3. I find exhaustion from exercise and a pamprin takes care of PMS for me real quick-like. The only side effect I can’t seem to get rid of is lightheadedness but that’s a great reason for a mid-day nap 🙂

  4. I hear ya! I am majorly PMSing this week. I just get very short tempered and snap at my husband. His response last night was at least I wasn’t doing this while we are on our honeymoon next week.

    • There’s something to be said for timing, haha!

  5. I tend to be overly emotional even when not PMSing but, oh boy, it gets really bad during that time of the month. I’m pretty sure my boyfriend thinks I’m a total nut case because I’ll just start crying for no apparent reason. He’s slowly learning to just not ask questions as my response is always “I have no idea why I’m crying!”. ha. Oh, and I also get horrendous cramps. Seriously, we girls have it hard, boys are so lucky to not have to deal with these issues. 🙂

    • Bahahaha, I totally said that to Sean yesterday. I was like “I WISH I WAS A GUY, YOU HAVE IT SO EAAAASY” with tears in my eyes. Seriously, I am a whacko. I’m so glad to know I’m not alone.

  6. So I”m actually pregnant right now, but I’ve only hit that hormonal emotional roller coaster twice, and it was just before my husband deployed, so I had that as an excuse. Well, flash forward to today when i started crying like a baby during an episode of Alias (I’m rewatching them, because I LOVED that show). Yeah…now I can’t stop crying about anything and everything.

    • Oh man. Sometimes I think about what I’m going to be like when I’m pregnant and at this point I’m pretty much convinced it’ll just be 40 straight weeks of crying, hahahaha.

  7. Oh Dear. Well, I can totally see why Twilight could make you cry… the bad acting, the bad writing… It can run crazy with your emotions… I went to the “hysterical laughter” place but I’m funny like that.

  8. I can totally relate! I used to wonder why some days I was SO overly emotional, until I realized recently that it always occurred right before that time of the month. I remember last summer heading out camping with my boyfriend and I was clearly in a “down” mood and he kept asking me what was wrong because I was taking it out on him.. and I honest to god had no idea why I was mad or upset, but I was! The same thing happened this weekend… I got pretty upset with him and there wasn’t a real good reason as to why. At least it only happens once a month? :s

  9. I had PMS so bad last week I was crying at my desk every day and praying no one would see me. It was a disaster. I kept asking my friends, “why is my life falling apart? I don’t even know what’s wrong” and really it was just PMS and everything is fine. It’s unfair that something should be able to destroy us like that!

    • I cry at work a lot more than I should probably admit. Luckily nobody has seen me yet, but I know it’ll happen one day and just the thought of that is so humiliating. I’m already the youngest person (by a lot) in my entire office, so I’m sure that won’t do much to help me on the “I want to be taken seriously” front, hahahahahaha.

  10. You should look into “rotating seeds”. It’s basically eating Omega 3 seeds (chia, flax, etc.) on days 1-14 of cycle, and then omega 6 seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, etc.) on days 14-28 of cycle. Really helps to balance hormones that have effect on mood, cravings, etc. 🙂

  11. There must be something in the air. This is the first week in a WHILE that PMS has pretty much taken me out. Between the pain, headaches and crying, I’ve had some chocolate cravings like whoa. Oh and the “I DON’T KNOW!” is a very common answer for me around the house when I’m in tears..so don’t worry 🙂

  12. I totally feel you! I get super emotional the week before, but I don’t keep track of anything so I don’t really notice when it’s happening. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is super observant and can tell exactly what’s going on. I’m thinking I need to download a phone app to track this stuff. Also, you’re super lucky you don’t get cramps. They suck.

    Have fun with the french fries! Maybe you could sub-in sweet potato fries? Pretend you’re being healthy? 🙂

    • Well cramps the week of the actual, well, you know, are a different story. Holy rhino-crippling pain, Batman! But yes, I know I’m pretty lucky that I never seem to have any trouble with that during the actual PMS/pre-period part.

  13. I’m with ya, sister. I just started today and my PMS symptoms were all over the place. A couple days before CD1, I get crazy hungry, nothing fills me up. Then like the day before or so I have no appetite, barely eat anything. I don’t get teary so much as I get even more ragey than normal. I pick fights with my husband over NOTHING and pretty much consider divorcing him during that time. Oh, and I bloat and feel like a beached whale in all my clothes, even pajamas. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? Oh, and cramps on day 1 are debilitating, but then essentially non-existent for the rest of the time. Lovely.

So I used to have REALLY bad cramping and bloating and all of those fun things, despite being on the pill since I was 15 (I had ovary problems that were corrected with a low dose of BCP since then). The one thing that I’ve found that has drastically improved ALL of my symptoms (including being emotion, my weird cravings, and back pain) is exercising. I know that the last thing anyone wants to do when they have their period is workout, but seriously, the entire week is so much better if I stick to regular exercise. I have almost entirely stopped taking anything for cramps, things are much lighter, and the cravings and mood swings are greatly enhanced. Kind of weird, but I’m a huge advocate of working out to improve the whole monthly cycle issues.

  15. Hahah “unconscious rebellion” of the diet. Oh yes! I notice that I crave more iron (for obvious reasons) and more comfort food. I also cry quite a bit at commercials which I find to be the most obnoxious…for I’m single for now so I can do this in privacy!

  16. I’m right there with you! I don’t get sad, I just get snarky. I’m a total bitch and everything makes me snap…then a few minutes later I want a hug.

  17. I’ve really lucked out thankfully…except for cramps…but if I’m cranky I totally blame it on PMS. : )
    PS-don’t worry about TMI. This stuff is real-we all go through it!

  18. I was in the same exact boat a couple weeks ago…for a week solid, driving home from work I’d find myself crying because of some song on the radio! Then I started reading a book and it nearly put me over the weepy edge, I had to put it down until I was more emotionally stable! My poor father just looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and shook his head, and all I could say was “I know…I’m being such a girl right now.”

  19. I had an overwhelming day at work, during which I kept shutting the door to cry. I also cried on the subway in front of total strangers and came home and had a total emotional meltdown over my stupid job.

    But then … I calmed down and was eating dinner. And I kept feeling the tears brimming up during the Thanksgiving episode of “Glee”!

    Yeah, it’s PMS.
