Fashion Friday: Amazonian

I’ve mentioned before that I’m finally starting to take control of my height. I stand at a not-outrageous-but-certainly-in-no-way-petite 5’9″. That’s 69 inches, or 175 centimeters. I am not short. And as being a, well not-short person, I’ve always found myself battling between my love of footwear and my desire to not seem like an Amazon. My mom and my sister both clock in at under 5’2″ (as does my future sister-in-law, Taylor) and my ex-boyfriend hated when I wore heels (he is 5’10” and evidently insecure about it). So for most of my life, I stuck to flip flops, flats, and the dreaded (and totally unflattering) kitten heel.

Well, not anymore! I refuse to relegate myself to cute but unremarkable footwear any longer! Yes, it does help that Sean stands at a perfect 6’1″ so I don’t have to worry about Nicole Kidmanning his Tom Cruise, but it’s more than that. I think it boils down to a confidence thing, too. Being tall means you stand out, right? Literally above the rest. And for a really, really long time, I didn’t want to stand out. Because standing out meant being The Fat Girl. I wanted to blend right in. Well, screw that. I don’t want to blend in any longer. I just want to be me.

And I am both 5’9″ AND I also love shoes of all heights. I am an equal-opportunity shoe lover. So there.

Sweater: Target
Pants: New York & Company
Harry Potter Book Page Necklace: Pretty Little Charms on Etsy
Zella Wedges: Sole Society

Whenever I wear more of a statement shoe, I try to keep everything else pretty color neutral. I also wanted to prove that yes, I do wear pants, not just dresses! Truth be told, though, I will always prefer dresses over pants + top. Coordinating tops and bottoms is a lot of work, haha.

Feeding my current shoe obsession is Shoe Society, a website where they have totally adorable shoes that are constantly rotating. They release a new style every day, and only appears to keep a style until it sells out. They are SUPER reasonably priced (I think the most expensive pair I’ve seen is a pair of boots at $69.95) and so far the quality seems good. Free shipping both ways, too. I’m not a spokesperson for them or anything (although I think that quite a few real fashion bloggers are), I just really like the concept. And the colors. And the price point. Also, if you sign up through my link and end up buying a pair, I get more monies to spend on shoes!

Good things I have all this high-heeled confidence now, eh? πŸ˜‰

  1. tall and proud! i too have dated short(er) guys and struggled with the height thing… but have learned to embrace it. legs look better in heels! πŸ™‚

  2. I too am 5ft 9in, but have never worn heels and can’t seem to walk in them (or when I manage to it hurts my feet). I love shoes though and wish I could wear cuter ones.

BTW my hubby calls me short, he’s 6ft 4in.

    • Haha! I do understand the pain threshold thing. That’s why I’m so in love with wedges and platform heels lately — although they usually mean the heel is even taller that way. But much more comfortable! With a 6’4″ hubby you definitely have a lot of (literal) room to experiment. You never know, maybe you’ll find that magic pair someday! πŸ™‚

  3. I take so much crap from people who tell me I can’t wear heels cause I’m so tall. I say eff that and embrace my ridiculous heels cause they make me happy. The downside being that when it comes to a lot of formalwear the dresses are just not long enough to let me wear heels with my fancy dresses. Sigh.

    I’m loving this series, btw!

    • Oh interesting. I wear so little formalwear (let alone full-length gowns) that I’ve never considered that. Guess that’s a bridge I’ll cross when I (eventually, hopefully, someday?) come to it! (Read: weddingweddingwedding, ahahahah)

  4. Cute shoes! I’ll have to check that site out. I love wearing heels, I’m 4ft 10in so I try to wear them as much as possible. πŸ™‚ I love the HP necklace too!

  5. Ah I TOTALLY know what you mean about dresses, I feel the exact same way. Plus they always fit me better than a pants + shirt combo. No chance of my butt crack showing… because we all know that’s a fantassttic look πŸ˜›

Anyway, super super cute outfit. Love the heels! Must try that website.

    • Bahahahaha. Yes, limiting the chance of plumber’s crack is definitely an essential part of my outfit planning too whenever I do deign to put on a pair of pants, ahahaha.

  6. Fabulous shoes! I’m 5’8 and am all about rocking the heels! My roommate in college was 6’3 WITHOUT shoes and I adored how confident she was about wearing heels. Confidence really makes us look amazing-I think it does more than any outfit/haircut/makeup/etc. can. When I’m having a rough (aka fat) day, I try to stand up a little straighter and it always makes me feel better even when I don’t feel great.

    • Yeah, every time I feel self-conscious now, I just try to think of Cat Deely, who hosts So You Think You Can Dance. I’m pretty sure she’s over 6′ without heels, and she’s always wearing GIANT heels and towering over the dancers on the show. Love it!

  7. I love your fashion friday features! So lovely. And you should rock heels. My friend and former co-worker is 6’2″ and she wears heels all the time. Own it!

  8. Yay! You are really working those heels!

  9. I love your new fashion posts! Your outfits are super cute and you look great!

  10. Keep rockin’ those shoes, girl!

I’m barely 5’2″ and I love heels. People make fun of me all the time for my less-than-age-appropriate footwear. I would KILL to be 5’9″ like you! And 5’9″ in heels isn’t Amazonian, it’s just super striking!

You clearly have a really good fashion sense, and the looks to carry it off. I remember from your earlier makeup posts how well you worked with cosmetics — seems like you are really branching out. Great job!

    • Thanks so much, CJ! I’m very flattered. πŸ™‚

  11. I’m 5’8…and wish I was an inch or two taller. Luckily my husband is 6’2 so I don’t have to worry about the Tom Cruise Syndrome.

  12. Tall girls in heels for the win! I’m 6 foot and I bought my first pair last year and even managed to wear then all day at my short cousin’s wedding, got a bit weirded out talking down to my aunts and uncles eventually though! Made me feel amazing, just need a nice 6’5″ man now.

  13. I love that you are wearing heels and love to do so! I am 5’8 and sometimes feel that tower over others, but I love to wear heals. Before I wouldn’t becausee I felt like a giant, not I do whatever I feel like wearing haha.
    Also, LOVE the capris~!

  14. Gretchen: Dumb question but what background (or editing software) are you using for your white background?

    • Not a dumb question! It’s a roll of seamless paper — my brother has a studio set up in our basement. I also use Adobe Lightroom to whiten the background further.

  15. Ha, I get this. I don’t think of myself as tall (5’7″), but I feel tall around shorter people. Wearing heels always felt like I was walking around with an arrow above my head.

    Great outfit, Gretchen.
