Unicorns & Grey Ghosts

I had my very first winery experiences this weekend! I had never been to a vineyard, gone to a real wine tasting, nada. Luckily, Jenny and the bro-in-law had a Living Social deal to use up and let me tag along. I should warn you: in case you weren’t aware, wineries are very picturesque. Prepare for photo explosion!

Awning Mawwiage

First stop:

Unicorn

Unicorn Winery in Amissville, VA! Naturally with a fluffy, pink, magical name like that, I was bound to enjoy these wines right from the get-go. And for only $5 to taste 10 different wines, I was right!

Taste
Slightly Embarrassed
Red

Oh yeah, and as you can see, I dyed my hair again… er, again. Forgot to mention that last week amidst all my wallowing and rage, hahaha. It’s a dark burgundy/auburn color. It can look brown/red/purple depending on the lights, which is kind of fun. I really like it!

I ended up picking up a bottle of the winery’s blush to bring to the wine party I’d be attending later than day, fittingly titled:

Blush
Slightly Embarassed

The unicorn’s even blushing! Hilarious.

After having driven for an hour to get to the winery, we weren’t willing to throw in the towel quite yet. So we hopped on down the road to another vineyard:

Grey Ghost

Gray Ghost Vineyards! While Unicorn Winery was incredibly crowded due to a soon-to-expire Living Social deal, this one was much more open and relaxed. The tasting for 10 wines here was only $3!

Grapes of Rap

They also had lots of funny wine paraphernalia to look at:

Classy

Cheap Date

It was also just incredibly beautiful there. We really lucked out on the weather — I think it was the last nice weekend we’ll have until Spring! Sad.

Gazebo Vines

We decided we couldn’t leave without jumpshots in the actual vineyard area.

Wheee!
Whee!

Of course, armed with heeled boots and a purse, mine was, er, not so graceful.

FailJump
Fail.

Oh well. No judgement, right Kerms?

Kermit

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

  1. I’m a VA native (just moved to CA last week!) and I’ve never heard of either of these vineyards! They look like fun though, wine tasting is the best especially on a nice fall day 🙂

  2. YAY the pictures turned out nice (well, except for that lovely belly on my jumping pic haha)- we really did luck out with the gorgeous weather! However, lesson I continually learn with wine tastings, i must drink more water or suffer the hangover that comes at 8pm! hehe. Glad you could join us!!

    • My head may have been throbbing a bit too, but I had more wine to drink that night so I rallied. 😉

  3. 🙂 I love the photo overload!

  4. I love wineries! The best kind are the ones that have a sense of humor, like a Slightly Embarrassed Unicorn. I think our good weather weekends are gone here in Florida… I thought I had been stolen away to somewhere way up north when I was going to work. Sigh. I like those boots, too!

  5. What a spectacularly beautiful fall weekend!!!!

And may I say how thin you’re looking in all those pictures!!! Way to go – your hard work is paying off!!!!! 🙂

  6. Your hair looks good

  7. Hi Gretchen. LOVE LOVE the pictures. Your look fantastic. BTW, your hair looks FANTASTIC too. Great name for a wine! I’d buy a case because I seem to be perpetually embarrassed about something! 🙂 Have a great week.

    • Haha, that’s what I was thinking too! My cheeks are always flushed with either embarrassment or too much wine, so I figured that either way it’s fitting! 😛

  8. Gorgeous photos! I love the light!

  9. love wine tasting!
and you look so slim in those pics!

  10. Hey Gretchen – I love reading your blog, but haven’t commented before. I wanted to today to tell you that you look fantastic in these photos! Not only do you look fit and happy, but your hair color is perfect for you. Have a good week 🙂

    • Surely NZ has its fair share of amazing vineyards?

      • It does! This post actually inspired me to work on a list of things I want to do while living in NZ for a couple years… including winery visits. I’m excited. 🙂

  11. I love, love, loove your new hair color! Very fall, very flattering. Well done! 🙂

  12. Looking at these photos of you, one would NOT have any idea that you’ve been disappointed with your weigh-ins lately… you look SO lean! Seriously… forget what the scale says… you look amazing 🙂

    • Oh my gosh. Consider my day made. Thank you so much, Catherine!

  13. First off I love your hair color it looks great!!

Second that first picture of you…you look amazing!! You look so sexy and fit!!

Third I love Grey Ghost wines and now I want to go try Unicorn wines the Blushing Unicorn is great!

  14. I wish there was a miniature version of that statue on my desk at work. It would make my desk a much happier place!
