Freitag Fünf

Yes, I’m a copycat. I fully admit it. Every blogger and her mom does a “Friday Favorites” or “Five for Friday” or some other cleverly alliterative post, and today I am no different. Well, except for the whole thing where the title of my post is in German (literal translation according to Babel Fish: Friday Five.) Hey, I gotta mix it up somehow!

See, my plan was to blog about my first training run (in preparation of the Hot Chocolate 15K that I signed up for in an insomnia-induced stupor Tuesday night.) I was going to have this whole schpiel about how I did it even though I incessantly tried to talk myself out of it and how I managed to complete X amount of miles and blahblahblah. But just as I was tying the laces on my Brooks, the skies opened up. And since I am barely a runner, let alone the kind of hardcore runner that runs in the rain, I kicked off my sneaks and did yoga in my room instead. Let’s just call it “cross-training” and move on.

I like lots of things, but especially these things right now.

1. La Croix Sparkling Water

You guys have known about my sparkling water obsession for a little while now, but I have to say it’s gotten a lot more focused since I’ve been introduced to this amazingness. I foresee many dollars being sacrificed to the La Croix gods in the future. Must… try… raspberry…

2. Brussels sprouts.

Sorry Pops, I know these are your least favorite food, but the little green brains are back in my life! These used to be one of my scary foods, but I’ve since learned better. Cook ’em up with some maple syrup and bacon? Man, oh man. Don’t worry, Dad, I’ll eat your share.

3. Weddings!

Tomorrow brings the FOURTH wedding that I will have attended since August. Whew! That being said, I still love weddings, and I am so, so happy to get to share in my friends’ special days. Steve, on the other hand, might be getting a little burnt out on my not-so-subtle bouquet-catching efforts, hahaha.

4. iOS 5

I just downloaded iOS 5 for my iPhone the night before last and I love it. Things are running smoother, faster, and I am OBSESSED with the new Banner notification option. Now when I get text messages they no longer pop up and interrupt whatever I’m doing – a notification simply slides down from the top. I can click it if I want, otherwise it will go away after a few seconds, sans interruptus. The new iMessage feature, where I can now text anyone else with iOS 5 for free (similar to Blackberry’s BBM function) is sweet too. Kinda makes that unlimited texting plan a little useless though, eh?

5. If I Die Young – The Band Perry

I know I’m really, really (um, a year?) late jumping onto this bandwagon but I have been eerily obsessed with this song lately. I literally cannot get it out of my head… and it may or may not be my ringtone as of 5 PM yesterday evening (damn you iTunes!) I’m sure my roommates are probably getting mighty sick of hearing me butcher it as I attempt to learn it on guitar though.

So what if October is already half over?! Better late than never!

1. Hit 184-point-something lbs.

I know this might not seem like the loftiest of goals considering I’m sitting at exactly 186.0 lbs (as of my last weigh-in), but with the aforementioned wedding coming at me tomorrow… well, it might not be such a gimme after all.

2. Complete a long run every weekend.

At this point, 4 to 5 miles is still a lot for me. I wasn’t able to run the Navy 5 Miler without walking, so I want to master that before trying to tack on any more distance. My goal is to do at least two shorter runs during the week and a longer run on the weekend. This is a really specific goal compared to how I usually plan things, so we’ll have to see how well I stick to it!

3. Go Shopping.

The feedback you guys gave me on yesterday’s clothing dilemma helped me decide that I should pick up a few more closet staples in the size I am now. I plan on snagging a couple of fall & winter basics to carry me through this in-between phase before I hit my goal weight. Thanks for giving me an excuse to spend more money, guys!

4. Bring lunch to work everyday.

I’ve been shamefully lacking in this area lately (and I was doing so well, too!) so I’m re-resolving to pack my lunch everyday. Bringing my own food is so much better for me, makes calorie counting so much easier, and is so, so, SO much cheaper.

5. Step up my photography.

Seeing Ben in photog mode (both at the wedding and at various portrait shoots like the one above with our friend’s baby) has made me really want to up the ante with my photography. Seeing him in action made me painfully aware of how much I still have to learn. I want to take a class, or at least spend some real time reading and viewing tutorials on how to master my camera and get to the next level of editing expertise.

And there you have it. Yet another one of my forays into a (hopefully) beloved blog fad. So now it’s your turn!

What’s one thing you’ve been loving lately, and/or one thing you’d like to accomplish before the end of October?

  1. How do I download this OS??

    • Once you plug your iPhone into your computer and open iTunes it should prompt you to update it automatically! If it doesn’t, you should be able to pick “Check for Updates” from the menu and do it that way.

  2. For what it is worth as photo-dummy, I am constantly impressed by the brightness and composition of your photographs. They are lovely. When you go down the road of more photography education, I can’t imagine what the results are going to be like!

    • Thank you, Julia! There’s definitely a lot more I can learn so I’m excited to see what kinds of classes and stuff are out there, haha 🙂

  3. Ahhhh, I think you might be inside my head! I can’t get enough of brussels lately too (especially roasted! yum!) OR that “If I Die Young” song!! It’s been on repeat non-stop.

  4. Ok, so, I have a confession. I COMPLETELY thought “If I Die Young” was Taylor Swift. Completely and totally without a doubt thought that. I’m so ashamed. Haha. As for your question(s) I’m not really a goal person….and I’m loving the Autumn leaves that I just started noticing in the past couple days 🙂

    • I thought that too at first! I think everybody does, the style is SUPER similar (and the lead singer even looks like T-Swift, hahaha!)

  5. the Band Perry are officially my favorite band. And I love the video…I haven’t done the research but I think it has something to do with that poem that Anne of GG was obsessed with, the Lady of Shalot. Have you heard the latest song? BEST. LINE. EVER. “I never liked the taste of crow but baby I ate it.”

    • I told Ben that we should form The Band Powell, since The Band Perry are all siblings too! 😀

  6. Oh wow I want to bite that baby. He (right? that might be a girl…oh god) is so smooshy!

    Ah hem.

Totally in love with my new sneakers. New Balance WT560. They are awesome, and part of the reason I think I can now run a 5k though I have not run a 5m. (meter) Magical things.

  7. Yay for goals – if you ever need a photography subject, my little man is more than happy to pose!

  8. If you ever want to try photographing horses/riding my horse and I are available 😉 …and I have 2 crazy dogs, too, not that you necessarily need more dog pictures since your pups take spotlight but ya never know 😉

  9. Its never to late to make a goal. I have a few goals for October but the main one was to bring my lunch every day too. I am pretty good about this most of the time, but every now and then I’ll eat out and it goes down hill from there. So far so good!

  10. I will take fun photography courses with you!! i really want to learn more too. I’m a complete novice.

Oh and I’m free to be a shopping partner:)

    • We’ll have to keep our eyes open for a Groupon!

      • I have a groupon for a photog class in DC…haven’t used it yet. But, that’s proof that they do exist! Mine’s a walking photography class/outing.

  11. I love La Croix!! The cran-raspberry is awesome…might be my favorite! How is the coconut? I haven’t tried it yet. I am LOVING an orange pair of saucony running shoes! I have decided they are my 10 lb reward. So excited.

    • I like the coconut, but my brother took a sip last night and was totally disgusted (it was literally a “WHAT IS THIS?!?!” response, hahaha.)

  12. I’m going to set the bar low on my October goal and say I *NEED* to clean out my closet & get my summer stuff put away by the end of the month. It’s such a mess right now.

    • Oh girl, if you only saw the state of my closet…

  13. I really like iOS 5 as well! Seems more chic – like my iPhone just grew up a little bit. <3

  14. I still stand by the fact that the coconut LaCroix is horrifying. More for you, then!! 🙂

I’m doing the hot choc 5k Nov 5….kudos to you for taking a challenge!!!

  15. You need to get yourself a soda stream! You’ll save so much money over time if you keep up with your new habit!

I want to PR in a 10k, AND get back to my goal weight by the end of the month!!!

  16. Okay so my iphone 4s is being to mi casa today (weee!) and I’ve never had an iphone before and I’m peeing my pants a little in excitement. congrats on your run! congrats on signing up for another one (you crazy, you). I have never tried brussel sprouts, but those look delicious!

  17. I’m running the Hot Chocolate 15K and I’m slightly in panic mode because I feel like death after 4 miles. But my dad tells me if I can run 4 miles, I can run 10. I’m following Hal Higdon’s 15K training plan with long runs on Saturday so let me know if you want a running buddy!!

My goals for October are to keep running and lose 5-6lbs!

    • I haven’t seen his 15K training plan yet… Googling!

  18. i also downloaded the ios5 yesetday too for my iphone 3gs, but i get my 4s today! so excited. i really like it, even if it seems like its a blatant rip off of droid, i dont care. now if only they will steel swype! the iphone would be perfect. i’m really excited for the camera on the home screen feature on the 4s….such a nerd i am. have you tried the editing on the photos yet? its pretty cool.

    • I haven’t tried the photo editing stuff yet, but I agree that I like the locked-screen camera button already. Makes snagging those moments so much easier!

  19. If I can learn to take half as good a photo as Ben I will be happy with October.

  20. I’ve yet to run into a Brussels sprout, which is a shame. I must get on that.

I’m currently obsessing over attending yoga class. I could be on that mat all day long.

My goal for the rest of October: no coffee. Gave it up on Monday and it’s going well so far.

  21. I did the EXACT SAME THING with the rain. Even though it only rained for a few minutes, it was just long enough to let me decide to go to dinner with my parents instead. Um.. oops.

The two short runs and a long run on the weekend is the recommended training schedule for the half marathon I’m running (The Disney Princess Half Marathon. It’s running. WITH PRINCESSES.), and it works pretty well for me. My running buddy and I get up at ungodly hours in the morning on Saturdays to run the long distance before we have to be at work.

  22. what ive been lovin is the crisp air and fall leaves, what i want before the end of the month is to look at my life with a more positive attitude! And i LOVE that song too.

  23. I think you take stunning pictures already!!
Ben seems to be a great photographer, nice to have him as a brother, no? 😉
Oh, and if you need any help translating into German- just go ahead ask me, it´s my mother tongue 😀 I was soooo surprised to see the title of this post!
I would like to stop thinking so much. Sounds strange, but I am constantly thinking about something (why certain situations arise, how I can deal with them, what I can do to improve certain things, if I should just run or do intervall training…), it´s so annyoing, especially at night, as I can´t go to sleep easily. Chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill, Michaela 😉

    • Hahaha, I was totally thinking of you when I randomly threw this post title up there. 😉

  24. Brussel sprouts are the BEST!!! Your photo makes me want to get out and gets some SOON!!!! Good luck on your October goals!!! Go girl!!!

  25. OOH brussels sprouts. Do you saute them in maple/bacon? For how long? I’m used to roasting them, but anything to bring more bacon into my life …
