Celebrate! (Weigh-in)

(Good times, come on!)

Yes, that’s right Friends. (HA! Get it?) We have some celebrating to do today! First things first, in case you didn’t see my multitude of tweets and facebook status updates regarding my trip to the hair salon this weekend…

Yes, the most recent picture I have with my hair down is from the Harry Potter midnight premiere. I’m okay with it.

Like a sheep, I have been shorn. The hair is gone! It’s definitely taking some getting used to (washing my hair felt sooooo weird!) but I’m kinda digging it — I feel very chic and modern! I feel like a super trendy mix of Keira Knightley, Agyness Deyn, and The Beibs. Which is fitting, since I am obviously as or more attractive as all of these people combined, duh.

So you guys can let me know whether the haircut is worth including as part of the celebration, kay? And, you know, if you don’t like it… well, we’ve already discussed that I’m not exactly built to handle criticism well. So. You know. Just bear that in mind. Heh. *Insecurity alert!*

I took my new ‘do out on the town Saturday night with the fam and my friend Lara to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center!

It was my second time seeing the show and it was fantastic, although I still missed seeing Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth take the stage (I was lucky enough to see the show with the original cast before it even hit Broadway in San Francisco 8 years ago!) Such a fun evening.

The next part of today’s celebratory, er, celebration has to do with this week’s weigh-in! I think you can assume that it’s good news given the general nature of this post, but let’s check the statistics just to be sure, shall we?

Starting Weight: 246 lbs
Last Week’s Weight: 190.0 lbs
This Week’s Weight: 189.6 lbs
This Week’s Loss: -0.4 lbs

Yes, granted, it’s not the world’s best weigh-in, considering I didn’t even lose a full 1/2 pound, but you know what? I don’t care! It’s the bump that I needed to bring me out of the 190s after (I’m almost ashamed to admit it) 5 months of zigging, zagging, and bouncing up and down. I’m in a brand new decade! And for the first time in, um, ever? I feel like I’m really getting to a, well, “normal” weight. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m still not “done”, but it’s just that being able to say you weigh 180-something feels just so, regular. I know I’m still overweight but I’m really getting there! Whoo-hoo!

Which brings us to our final piece of celebratory news (this is quite the announcement-ridden Monday, isn’t it?), which is actually quite bittersweet: today is my last day of work at my current job! I’ll be starting a new job in DC (scary!) soon, and while I’m obviously very excited about it, I’m also super sad to be leaving my current coworkers and friends behind. But I do feel it’s the right choice for me at this stage in my career and I’m looking forward to the new opportunity! Working in the city will be a big adjustment for me, but I think it’ll be a good one. Time for me to take my new grown-up haircut and, you know, grow up! Plus walking to the metro is sure to at least guarantee me a modicum of exercise each day, eh?

Huzzahs all around: haircuts, career moves, and weight loss – oh my! What are you celebrating today?

  1. Your hair looks great. It does not look like Justin Bieber! Congrats on the new gig and the 180’s! You sound so happy in this post!

    • What can I say? It’s a happy kinda day (weird to say for a Monday, huh?) 😀

  2. 1) Your hair is totally hot. But you already knew that I think that.
    2) CONGRATS on the 180s! There is definitely something about the 180s that is the “Promised Land”. 180 is the weight on my driver’s license, and the day I actually get there will be awesome.
    3) Don’t feel bad about bouncing around for the last few months. I used to think weight loss was a one track train going straight to the destination, but I’m starting to realize that it bounces around and doubles back. I have been gaining and losing the same 5 pounds since November.
    4) Congrats on the new job! You have so much good news this morning. 🙂

What am I celebrating? Nothing. I’m really hating this Monday. But your excitement makes me happy. 🙂

    • I agree. I always say that I really would rather it take me a year to lose the last 20 lbs and me enjoy the ride than lose it all in 4 months and be miserable doing it. I say that the former provides a much higher chance of long-term success!

  3. 1) Sometimes I think I AM Monica Gellar.

    2) Your haircut is AMAZING! I had a very similar cut in high school and was obsessed with it. Seriously, you rule. And…the Bieber pic made me LOL.

    3) 180s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Haha! I know the feeling – I am a total Monica (although perhaps enough of a weirdo to say that I’ve got some Pheebs in me too. :P)

  4. YAY!!! I’m so happy for you 🙂 🙂 🙂

And I love the new haircut — I’ve always wanted to go super short but I’ve always chickened out. Plus my hair has waves in the wrong places so it would look crazy on me I’m sure. But I think it looks good on you!

    • I was sweating bullets in the chair – it’s definitely nervewracking! The one side of me always is like “it’s just hair!” but the other side is always terrified. Usually works out though, and even if not – it always grows back!

  5. I love, love, love the new ‘do. It’s super chic. I’m not built to pull off super-short hair, but you definitely are. It looks great. 🙂

    Congrats on the 180’s!! That’s fantastic. 🙂

I adore Wicked, and saw it on Broadway with the original cast. I actually won the “lottery” tickets, the first time (yes, saw it several times w/ Idina and Kristin!) and saw it from the very front row. Amazing.
(Have you read the book? It’s odd, but captivating).

    • Jealous about the front-row seats! I’ve heard magical things about the lottery… man! And yes, I have read the book. I agree, it’s a little odd — definitely not as family-friendly as the show, but good. Just a little more serious… and depressing… but still very vivid. Have you read any of Gregory Maguire’s other books? I’ve heard good things about “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister”!

  6. Hi Gretchen! First of all, I love your new hair cut! And congratulations on making it into the 180s!! 🙂 Keep up the great work!

  7. i think you definitely can rock that haircut- very chic. Congrats on breaking the 190’s finally. YAY what a great feeling. See you tonight for a celebratory dinner (well, it’s that plus a thank you for watching the pupster, haha)

    • It is a great feeling! Hopefully one that will last, and I don’t get stuck in the 180s for the next SIX months… eep!

    • Yayyyy! You’re making some serious strides yourself, lady! I agree, catching up must be done!

  8. Congrats on getting into the 180s and on the new job! It’s like you’re having the best Monday ever, haha. And the haircut looks great, it’s very stylish!

    • Haha! For perhaps the first (but hopefully not last!) time ever! 😀

  9. Congrats Gretchen – loving the hair!!!! What a wonderful Monday for you!

  10. I love the haircut! You look gorgeous 🙂
I just saw Wicked at the Kennedy Center a few weeks ago. It’s such a good show.
Congrats on the 180’s. I love happy posts like these. They put me in such a good mood!

    • It was such a fun show, right? And hey, I’m happy to help. I figure on Mondays most people need a pick-me-up, right?

  11. Congrats!! Now you really have to gear up for those runs you have coming up!!! You are on quite a roll! Keep it up!!

  12. GAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I absolutely love it! My hair was really short last summer and I miss it but my friends are like, “NOOOO! Let it grow!” I love it on you! SO CHIC.

    • Yeah, I know, I always go back and forth too, as do my friends. I’m sure in like, a week I’ll be missing my long hair, even though the reason I did it was because I was getting sick of longer hair. I’m so fickle. 😛

  13. OMG! I LOVE your hair! Love love love love love!

Also, YAYCONGRATS on the new weight decade, and the new job!

  14. I want to pull off that haircut, but i cannot do it! You look fabulous. And hooray for the new job in DC!

    • I think everyone can pull it off. You just gotta go for it! It’s only hair, right? 😀

  15. LOVE. IT. You look so… classy chic! And congratulations on this milestone! The ’80s (be they of the decade or the scale) are worth some celebrating! Just…leave the neon spandex in the closet….mkay? Also, kick that new job in the facehole!!! 😀

    • Bahahahaha. I do love the 80s. Now in every sense of the word. No promises about the neon spandex though — but c’mon, everything comes back into style, right?? 😀

  16. Love love love the hair cut!! 🙂 Very sexy yet cute! And congrats on hitting the 180s!!! Such an awesome accomplishment! (wow…sorry about all the exclamation marks)

    • Haha, hey, I used quite a few of ’em myself in this post! It’s an exclamation-y kinda day! !!! !!!!!!!! ! 😉

  17. lots of changes! All great and exciting! Love the hair and congrats on being in the 180s!!!

  18. LOVE the haircut! Looks fab! I chopped my hair a few years ago and am going to do it again in a couple of weeks! Congrats again on 180s!

    • Yay! Hair-chopper-offers of DC, unite!

  19. Whoa GRETCHEN!!!!!

    The hair is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!

Are you wearing a robot necklace? Cool.

Everything is comin up roses for ya ….! Good start to a new month. Hello August 1!

We should all celebrate your hard work @ takin off the pounds. Honestly. You look amazing!

    Keep on smiling Gretchen …..!

    • Hahaha, yep! That is a robot necklace — cute, right? Forever21 has some surprisingly cute stuff if you can survive all of the teenagers clawing at the racks, ahahaha. Thanks Marcee!!

  20. Wow wow!! Big news today!!!

That is so exciting — starting a new job can be scary, but it’s also super awesome. I love big changes! And you will looooooooove working in the city, it’s pretty fantastic. I don’t think you could pay me a million dollars to pull me away from city life 🙂

Your hair is faaaabulous, dahling. Lovely! and CONGRATS!!!!! 🙂

    • I think it’ll be good for me fo’ sho’. I’m a grown up now! Or something! 😀

  21. Look at you, you sassy vixen!! I’m LOVING that new hair! We are hair twins, like how did we manage to COMPLETELY change our look (head up) in the same weekend? I’m sort of beginning to think we are the same person.

Oh and UM, 180s!!!!! Wahoo!! Is it wrong that I think we should celebrate with wine?

    • Hahaha, is wine ever wrong? (The answer is no.) And I agree, we are totes soulmates (I’m starting to find a lot of soulmates through the blog. I kind of love it. And by kind of I mean really. Really really.) Hang outsies soon plz!

  22. The hair looks awesome! How fun and “edgy”, yes? 🙂

Congrats on the weigh-in lady, you’re doing so great! Hope you feel the same, too!

    • Haha, ’cause I am sooooo edgy 😛

Thanks Heather! Feels good, feels pretty good, not gonna lie.

  23. I LOVE your hair! In fact, you’ve inspired me to…well…at least consider getting my hair cut short. Ha! It’s such a leap of confidence to go out and get it cut, even though I’m so sick of my hair being long. I tend to just throw it up in a pony tail, so why not?

    You’re rocking the look! 😀

  24. So I already told you how much i LOVE your hair on twitter, but super big congrats on the new job in DC and weigh-in!! I hope you love working in DC – I know I do 🙂

    • Where do you work in the city? Maybe we can meetup for lunch or happy hour or something!

  25. Hi Gretchen!
I’m a frequent reader and love your positive attitude to life. The haircut looks gorgeous!!

    • Thanks Olivia! Guess you haven’t stumbled across too many of my moody, teenagery posts, eh? 😉

  26. OMG–I LOVE your haircut!!! I have always wanted, but never been brave enought to expose my super pinchable(read: chubby) cheeks to that cut. You are ROCKIN it, girl!! Beautiful!

  27. your hair looks amazing! and you’re a rockstar! i’m so proud of you!

  28. Ahhhhhhhhhhh congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! Where in DC is it? I work in DC and will be living downtown in one month!

    • Assuming this FAA furlough eventually someday gets resolved, I’ll be in L’Enfant. Is that close to where you’ll be? Lunch datteeeee!

  29. 1) Congrats on the new job!
    2) Yay for the weight loss!
    3) Your new hair cut looks super cute!

  30. Congratulations!!! I’m celebrating closing on my first place! I am thrilled!
