DC Blogger Meetup: Ella’s

Ahoy-hoy, friends! Today’s post is coming to you a bit later than usual this morning, but you’ll see why in a bit. Phew! Between sushi, crashing a culinary school class, and last night this week has been a whirlwind! But a superawesomefuntastic whirlwind, of course.

So last night, I met up with fellow bloggers Kacy, Katie, Allison, and Jess for dinner & drinks at Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza in Chinatown! (Photo purloined from Jess.)

Ella’s has an amazing happy hour that goes from 4 – 7, and it was PACKED. Katie and Allison arrived there early, so they had staked out a couple seats at the bar. We ended up having to wait a while for a table, but somehow we survived…

$3.50 glasses of sangria? Don’t mind if I do!

Thankfully all that time waiting gave us plenty o’ time to peruse the menu, so we ordered pretty much as soon as we were seated. Can’t keep hungry bloggers from their food, after all!

I got the strawberry & orange salad to start (with spinach, candied slivered nuts, and goat cheese), and the margharita pizza.

Which I ate 2/3 of, and it was soooo good. There’s nothing quite like melty fresh mozzerella and fresh basil having a party in your mouth, no sirree. Of course, the absolute best part about going to dinner with other bloggers?

I’m never the only one taking pictures of my food! A big round of applause for the evening’s organizer too, btw: thanks Kacy!

I know you want to thank me for posting this photo, so I’ll just preemptively say you’re welcome. πŸ˜‰

It was a fantastic evening, even with the stifling humidity. Unfortunately, the night didn’t end quite as awesomely. Remember at the beginning of the post how I referenced mentioning why I’m posting a little late today? Well, that’s because I was up LATE last night… throwing up. Urk. I don’t know if it was the sangria, the salad, the pizza, or some combination of the three but something just didn’t sit well with me. I started feeling nauseous on the Metro ride home, but thankfully held it together until I walked in the door (thanks again for the ride, Kacy!) So it took me a little longer than usual to pull myself together this morning after the not-so-fun-ness that occurred post-dinner. Whatever, still worth it. The only true tragedy is that I had to throw out my leftover pizza this morning, since I really didn’t want to risk getting sick again. Sad.

Thanks for this pic, Kacy!

We’re going to try to implement a monthly outing like this, so other bloggers/blog readers in the area, mark your calendars! I believe we’re aiming for the next one to be at Graffiato, Top Chef (!!) contestant Mike Isabella’s new restaurant, in August. More details to come, but come one, come all!

Have you ever gotten food poisoning before? Have any thoughts on it, tips for avoidance, home remedies, recovery foods, anything like that?

  1. Oh no!!! I’m so sorry you got sick last night, especially after such a delicious meal! That’s miserable!

Hope you’re feeling better this morning.

And last night was an absolute blast! I’m so, so excited for our monthly dinners!

    • Just a small dent in an otherwise perfect evening. Graffiatoooo!

  2. Ugh, yuck. Sorry about that! Food poisoning sucks!
The first time I had food poisoning was in 2008, from Steak ‘n Shake. (Yes, nasty fast food – I know. That was also the last time I had Steak ‘n Shake). It was dinner at 10pm on a Sunday night, after returning home from a weekend away, returning the rental car,etc – and we were desperate for food. Enter grilled cheese and a strawberry milkshake… That I saw again at 6:00 a.m. the next morning, while taking the dog out in the backyard. Yucky.
Unfortunately I don’t have much advice for you, except to keep the eats simple today… BRATT diet, maybe?

    Hope you feel better soon!

    • This is going to make me sound like a noob but… BRATT? Bread… rice… something…? Help me out here. πŸ™‚

      • Oooh, sorry. I have a nurse for a Mom, and I work with kids – I forget not everyone knows what that means! πŸ™‚

Bananas, rice, applesauce, tea and toast.

It is supposed to be nice and gentle on upset tummies. πŸ™‚

  3. And I was just going to tell you how good that pizza looked…Well, it *looked* really good, and I hope you’re feeling better now!

    • It tasted really good too! Le sigh.

  4. Oh no!!! That’s awful. That happened to me a month or so ago and it was miserable. I hope you feel better!
Had a blast seeing you again and I can’t wait for the next one. Hopefully your stomach will fare better that time.
Oh, and the food stuffing picture is awesome. I have no shame.

    • It is awesome, but we already knew that since you are awesome. πŸ™‚ And I’m sure that my stomach of not-quite-steel will fare just fine at Graffiato. I mean, it better… I’m so looking forward to eating there!!

  5. oh NO! So sad you got sick! Are you feeling better this morning?

Had a BLAST hanging out with you. Can’t wait for next month!

    • I am feeling loads better this morning, although my appetite is still a little backed off (perhaps a good thing, hahaha.) I still had an awesome time though, so fret not for me! πŸ™‚

  6. Aside from the whole getting sick conundrum, sounds like a great time! DC has so many great places to eat. How can I live only 40 minutes away and not stop there more often?!

    • No excuse! You have to come with next time! πŸ˜€

  7. Oh no, I’m so sorry you got sick! I had food poisoning twice – once in HS and it was so bad my mom and I ended up in the ER (which is really appropriate punishment for getting KFC – guh, never again!). The other time from expired sour cream at a Mexican restaurant.
Sometimes, even when I don’t get food poisoning my stomach gets really cranky about the combination of food I decide to eat and I get really pukey. I have no idea what causes it but it’s really frustrating. I hope you’re feeling better soon!!

  8. I have definitely gotten food poisoning too many times in my life to count (or maybe I’m slightly exaggerating). Just last fall, I had a serious one that caused an (warning for upcoming TMI) intestinal infection. DISGUSTING! I was pretty much bedridden for 3 days. The only thing that worked for me during that worst of the worst case: Gatorade (or any electrolyte enhanced drink) and dry toast. I was surprised that I could live off of the stuff for 3 days… not well though.
Hope you’re feeling better! There’s not much advice I can dish out since all of my food poisonings were treated differently. But sleeping always helps me!

  9. Ooh I love Top Chef but I found Mike Isabella super annoying. I hope his food is good though!

Sorry to hear about your food poisoning — that has never happened to me, but it has happened to Jason quite a bit.

  10. I hope you are feeling better now! So sorry to hear that the good food made you sick. πŸ™ I had a lot of fun and it was good to “actually” meet you this time!

  11. Oh no! Hope you feel better!

  12. I’m not sure I’ve ever had food poisoning- I always say that I’m less likely to get it given my vegetarian diet but clearly that is not the case as your meal was veg and you got sick! Maybe I have an iron stomach? Yuck- it looks awful so I hope i never have to deal with it!!

  13. Ella’s is one of my favorite meetup spots! Isn’t their sangria AMAZEBALLS? πŸ™‚

  14. You must let me know of the next DC blogger meet up!!!
