Living Healthy

Healthy living means a lot of things.

It means salted edamame.

It means tofu that is, yes, smothered in sauce.

It means good-for-you sushi…

…and not-so-good-for-you sushi, too.

But hey, it’s okay. After all, you’re sharing with a friend!

Recycled photo of Ania and me at the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade

After furnishing my pantry with some supplies from Trader Joe’s yesterday, Ania and I had a decadent sushi dinner at Koi Koi — where else? The cuisine, company, and conversation was just what I needed. Healthy living does, after all, extend beyond what we put in our mouths and do with our muscles! Mental and emotional wellbeing is just as, if not more, important than physical health (and failure to attend to all of the above inevitably results in a rapid degeneration of general wellness, as I know all too well.)

Unhealthy: physically, emotionally, mentally.

Getting there…

Between the evening and yesterday morning’s weigh-in, this week has kicked off surprisingly well! So I’m going to take my good mood (180-degrees from last week’s Gloomy Gussery) and do something potentially frightful:

Ask me anything.

No, really! This is your opportunity to ask any questions you might have for me regarding my journey, my methods, my habits, my food, my past… heck, even the dogs are fair game! I figure it’s about time I compile a good old-fashioned Q&A/FAQ page anyway, so this is where I’ll start. Not comfortable leaving your question in the comments? Feel free to DM me on Twitter or email me at gretchen@honeyishrunkthegretchen.com instead.

Ahhh, true pandering to my conceited and self-centered nature at last. πŸ˜‰ Knock yourselves out! This evening I’ll be auditing a culinary school class at a local institution. I’m really excited, so stay tuned for a report on that. Hopefully the chef won’t mind me bringing my camera…!

  1. Okay, here’s my question: what exactly is healthy to you? Is healthy a goal you reach or achieve or a lifestyle you live? Do you have to wait to become it, or can you start today with the choices you make?

I always like to hear others’ take on it. πŸ™‚

    • Ooooh, great question! This is definitely one that I’ll be saving for the Q&A post/page… so I can figure out what my answer is! πŸ˜€

  2. I am sure you have covered this before, but I will ask just to put it back out there, as I think I may be in need of a bit more motivation. πŸ™‚

Thinking back on your time along this journey, at what point, if ever, did you find yourself hitting a wall? What was holding you back and what did you do to break through?

    • Hahahaha, haven’t you noticed it’s taking me 5 months to lose 10 lbs? I’d think that I DEFINITELY have gone through the wall-hitting phase (and frankly, probably still am.) I’ll definitely be addressing this question in more detail!!

  3. Great seeing you yesterday…so much fun as always : ) Too bad the food stunk ; ) ha

You didn’t tell me about today’s class though! How fun! Looking forward to that recap.

My question for you is….so what sushi rolls are we getting next time at Koi Koi?!!? hahaha jk jk

Although here’s a really random question that popped in my head just now since it did come up in our convo yesterday for a brief second……what is your nut butter of choice? Almond, peanut, sunflower……..? Brand? From your posts I’m assuming it might be Justins! Have you ever tried PB & Co?! Delish! Also, although its like $15 a jar, Artisana’s organic raw coconut butter is simply AmAziNg!

    • Hmmmmm, favorite kinds and brands of things that I like – great idea! I do get asked similar things a lot so putting it all in one place will make it easy-peasy. Stay tuned… (Hahahaha, SUSPENSE!)

To answer your latter questions, I haven’t tried PB&Co. but I hear really good things, and I am *DYING* to try Artisana’s coconut butter but I can’t find it/can’t justify buying it online, hahaha. I’m sure I’d just drink the entire thing.

  4. What would you love to do — what is your dream job (if money were no object) — I love hearing answers to this question.

    • Haha! What a great question. I hope you don’t mind an entire essay in response! πŸ˜‰

  5. I’m most interested in your blogging habits!…HISTG is one of my faves after all! πŸ™‚

Time spent writing, photographing, photo-editing (if any), researching, etc. Do you seek out activities, meals, restaurants to try to create blog posts, or do you let your posts just happen more organically.

    • ::blush::

Your timing couldn’t be better! I’ve been thinking about doing a couple posts on this lately anyway, because it’s always a hot topic at all the blogging conferences (and I love KathEats.com’s posts on her process. So helpful!) I might have to dedicate some separate time to this though, since I feel like the whole blogging side of things is an entire other can o’ worms!

  6. Here’s one!

If you were to open a food establishment, what would you feed your hungry customers? And how do you think your answer might have changed along your “journey” to healthy living?

    • Ooooof, a good probing question indeed! Must percolate on this one…

  7. Okay, so my question is more to do with food. I am a new move to Baltimore and am searching for a good sushi and cupcake place. Not sure if you liike cupcakes (I have a small obsession) but you seem to like sushi so could you recommend a place? πŸ™‚ Thanks!

    • PSH. Do I like cupcakes… what kind of question is that! πŸ˜‰ http://honeyishrunkthegretchen.com/2011/07/02/cupcakes-and-pizza-and-panda-oh-my/

I know I certainly have my Northern Virginia/DC area faves for both (you simply MUST take a trip down to Georgetown Cupcake… I think they have a Maryland location, too!) but I’ll have to give some thought to places up further North that I’ve tried. My sister lives in Columbia and probably has some places to recommend as well. Stay tuned!! πŸ™‚

      • Georgetown Cupcakes for sure. As for Sushi, Oh man, so many good ones! In Baltimore, Ra sushi is great. Edo isnt bad. In Annapolis, Joss Sushi and Nano.
This list could go on and on. Baltimore has so many great places to eat!

        • Thanks y’all. I’m excited to start eating. I’ve heard of the DC cupcakes and yeah, found out they have a branch in Bethesda. Can’t wait. thanks!

  8. This post makes me want sushi so badly! I think lunch is calling my name at 9am.

  9. Hmmm, I know…

What foods can you absolutely NOT eat? I, for one, can’t eat ice cream…otherwise, everyone within a 5 mile radius will hate me. D:

  10. Is everyone supportive of your healthy ways? Did you have any friends who weren’t on board with any chagnes you made when you starting getting healthy?!

    • Oh my gosh, I cannot WAIT to answer this one. Always so interesting…

  11. This is a wonderful post!! And so true.
CanΒ΄t think of any questions right now.

  12. How are you doing with the mental side of the process with losing so much weight? It’s something I still struggle with greatly, and as I’m re-doing my wardrobe it’s becoming more and more evident that I have a problem!

    • I’m not sure I 100% understand your question. Do you mean how do I come to terms mentally with the fact that I’m not the same old fatty fat fat person? Hahaha. Like, accepting the physical changes mentally? Or… maybe I’m just totally off my rocker here. Clarify and I shall answer! πŸ˜€

  13. I’m curious to know what has been your biggest struggle in your journey so far and what you’ve done (or what you’re doing) to get through it.

    • Great, great question. All shall be revealed… you guys are providing some fantastic and thought-provoking ones here!

  14. What is your favorite GO TO snack food?
