Reward & Punishment

Since hitting the big 5-0 mark in my weight loss journey, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about rewards. As in, should I reward myself for hitting this milestone in my weight loss? I’ve seen several weight loss bloggers out there set up a rewards system of sorts where they identify specific items to award themselves when they meet certain weight loss goals.

When I started this weight loss journey, I listed some fitness and weight loss goals on my Goals & Progress page, but I never really associated any kind of reward with meeting them. I guess that for me, just being able to cross them off the list was reward enough! As a means of motivating me to lose weight, my mother has said for years that if I was able to get down to a healthy size, she would buy me a brand, spankin’ new wardrobe. Now that I’m actually losing weight and not just doing the whole “Yeah, yeah, Mom, I will…” thing, that reward (and what a reward it is!) has always been in the back of my mind, but I’ve never done anything to measure my “smaller” successes.

How do you feel about setting up mini-weight loss rewards? Do you feel they make losing a large amount of weight more manageable? Or do they make it too much about “winning” and not about the “lifestyle change?”

I did reward myself for an unrelated reason earlier this week, however. Say hello to my newest birthday gift (from me, to me!)

Isn’t she beautiful? Her name is Stevie (appropriate, considering the boyf, don’tcha think?) and I nabbed her on sale PLUS an extra discount for the Kate Spade Friends & Family discount over the weekend. Score! If you wanna be purse buddies, you can still pick her up in navy (yellow’s all sold out because it’s AMAZING.)

So while we’re on the subject of things that are amazing, let me tell you about something that is… not. (Did you like that smoooooth transition? Hahahaha.) Have you all seen the video of the world’s guiltiest dog?

Well, let me introduce you to the world’s 2nd most guilty dog (I really wish I had taken video of his penitence…):

The cause for such guilty, literal puppy dog eyes?

Guess I’m in the market for a new pair of sneakers. Any suggestions? My last ones were Asics, and I really liked them, but I’m down to try out whatevs (it’s not exactly like I’m a connoisseur or anything, haha.) Bad puppy. Bad, stinkin’ adorable puppy.

I think this may be Daxter‘s way of telling me to work out more. I suppose it is a fitting punishment for me, considering how lacking in workout-ing I’ve been since I proclaimed its absolute necessity (oh the irony.) I get the hint, Daxy!

I really am working on that whole fitness thing, y’know. As soon as I get a new pair of sneaks. πŸ™‚

PS: Have you entered my blog giveaway yet? Be sure you do before 3 PM Friday!!

PPS: I’m so excited and honored to have my very first guest post going up today! Check it out over at Anne’s incredible blog, FANNEtastic Food!!

  1. DAXTER!!! But look at that face. I couldn’t be mad at him for long.

I love your new purse — the yellow is so summer-y!

  2. 1) it’s Asics silly
    2) It must be really hard to stay mad at that adorable smushie-face
    3) Your new Kate Spade bag is really cute and summery
    4) Duh, get a pair of Under Armour shoes!

  3. i’ve lost 2 pairs of flats, 2 pairs of sneakers, and 3 (YES THREE) blankets to mwaji during her teething phase. now shes all about the tissues so i always have to make sure that my trash lid is TIGHTLY closed. oh its hard to b a mommy…

on a brighter note (pun intended), LOVE the bag <3 i just recently bought a small kate spade coin purse for when i need to cram my ID, cash, and cards into a tiny clutch πŸ˜›

  4. I always go with Air Pegasus (Nike) I have run in nothing but them for 7 years.

Also I would suggest waiting for a groupon it seems like every 3 weeks one of the running stores have one πŸ™‚

  5. Love the purse! Happy Belated Birthday!

  6. I really like the “rewards” idea. I’m thinking I may need to start this cause that purse is way cute! Also, I don’t own any but my titi(aunt) works out/jogs A LOT and she highly recommends buying saucony. I’m planning on buying some sometime soon because my sneakers are now giving me blisters, ouch.

  7. I used to wear Asics, and they’re great, but my most recent pair are Rykas. They are shoes specifically made for women and they are super light weight!
When my dog was a puppy he destroyed 4 different sets of sheets…I love bedding so this was heartbreaking! Now I just make sure he gets as much exercise as me and I have never had a problem since!

  8. I just found your blog (from Anne at Fanntastic Food) and I love it. I’m totally in your boat. Everything I’ve read about how you felt on day one about life, food, your weight is where I’m at. Every morning I get up and try to do good and I fail starting with breakfast so I just give up the rest of the day. I am a follower now and hope to find a lot of encouragement through your blog. So many healthy living blogs are from super skinny girls who have always been that way – that I can’t relate to. Thanks for being honest and real with your blog…it’s just what I need.

By the way, you look fantastic. Keep up the hard work. πŸ™‚
