It’s Not Easy Being Green

Top o’ the mornin’, friends! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! My legs don’t work anymore!!

Evidently it is true what they say. You feel the most sore 24-48 hours after exercising.

So, considering how sore I felt a mere 12 hours after P90X-ing it up on Tuesday night, I think you can imagine the incredible pain I am in today. Um, yeah.

Good thing I know that my fabulosity even makes hobbling down the front porch steps muttering “ow, ow, ow” super sexy (why is sitting down/going downstairs soooo much worse than standing up/going upstairs?!) I guess I’m just a masochist though, because even though the entire lower half of my body is still on fire, I’m excited at the prospect of trying out another P90X video (but a DIFFERENT one! Plyometrics can go to h-e-double-hockey-sticks) once I’m back to normal. Maybe CardioX. Even though that kind of defeats the purpose of doing P90X since I’m trying to use it for strength training. Ahhhh well.

Got any tips for relieving post-exercise muscle soreness? I’ve tried stretching out my quads as much as I know how to, but it’s really my glutes (heh) that are causing me the most pain. Sitting down on the toilet is pretty much my idea of hell right now (TMI?) Hahahaha.

I made the most awesome hummus last night. Observe:

Curried coconut hummus! Oh yes.

Into the food processor went:

1 can chickpeas
1 teaspoon coconut oil (I probably should have used more for more actual coconut flavor)
2 tablespoons tahini
2 tablespoons grated coconut
Juice of 1/2 lemon
3 cloves garlic
A crapton of curry power, red pepper flakes, and paprika
Olive oil (didn’t measure)
Salt & pepper to taste

It. Is. Awesommmmme.

Granted, I probably went a weeeee bit crazy in the seasonings department. It is SUPER curry-ish, and less coconutty because of it. But I dig the texture of the tiny coconut pieces in the hummus and it’s so flavorful and NOMtastic. It made a reappearance in today’s lunch (leftover tofu stuff my mom made me and a salad with greens, red onion, strawbs, and topped with said hummus.) Huzzahhhh!

Last night for dinner, my dad treated Ben, Taylor, and I to dinner at Mad Fox. I got a black bean burger:

With pickled red onions (I really need to learn how to pickle things!) on it, and a side salad:

Their side salad comes with all sorts of fun stuff! Olives, green beans, mushrooms — in addition to red onion, tomato, cukes, etc! The burger itself was okay. It was fairly flavorful but still a little bit soft. I also snagged a few of Ben’s fries — oops! He gave up fries for Lent and didn’t realize they came with his meal, so I was just trying to help him out! 😉

So let’s fast forward past an uncomfortable night sleep-wise due to the whole my-legs-have-betrayed-me thing, to this morning! In true St. Patty’s Day spirit, things started off with a Luck O’ the Irish juice:

1 granny smith apple
1 cucumber (peeled)
4 stalks organic celery (!)
1/2 meyer lemon
1 piece ginger

Notice how I turned the measuring cup to the metric side in honor of our Irish friends. 😉

I’m all out of leafy greens so I doubled up on the amounts of celery and cuke I usually use. The tons of celery, as well as the cucumber-ness of the juice made it really refreshing! Maybe one day I’ll get to the point where I can just just veggie-juice, no apples or pears needed… but I’m not sure I actually want to get to that point. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I also brought the other half of my pummelo with me for brekky, but I haven’t dug into it yet.

Is everyone getting in their St. Patty’s Day green today? I’m both wearing it and drinking it this morning! Have a faaaaaaaaabulous day! 🙂

  1. Mm that hummus sounds yummy! And regarding soreness – I’d recommend lots of stretching. And buy a foam roller!

    • I do have a foam roller, actually! Except I got a humongo one accidentally so it’s kind of hard to find space to use. I think I need to review your instructional vid too, sensei! 😀

  2. It wouldn’t really help you now, but for the next time, take a really hot extra salty bath. The hot water helps to relax the muscles while the salts do some miraculous thing that I am unfortunately too brain dead to explain. But it must be done the night of the major workout!
