A Great Way to Start the Day…

… is in a hospital. Not. Awoke this morning at 3:30 AM with intense, sharp pains in the upper right quadrant of my abdomen. Tried in vain for a while to get it to go away — took some Advil, Maalox, stretched, went to the bathroom — to no avail, and eventually knocked on my brother’s door and sobbed that I needed to go to the hospital. Taylor was a saint and drove me to Inova Fairfax Hospital; we arrived at 5 AM.

Three and a half hours later I’m home with two types of painkillers and no diagnosis. They were able to rule out appendicitis and gallstones, which is good I guess, but since my pain turned out not to be emergent, I was discharged. I actually picked a really good time to go, luckylucky me, since there were very few people in the ER at the time. I was in and out really rather efficiently – blood drawn, cup peed in, morphine administered, ultrasound performed, results gathered, prescriptions written — all in about 2 hours.

Needless to say, I am still in pain (though it is somewhat muted at present moment thanks to glorious drugs) and generally annoyed that I still don’t have an explanation. I’m supposed to follow up with my “primary care physician” tomorrow. Guess I should probably get a primary care physician, eh? A similar thing happened to me back in 2005 when I was home visiting my parents my Freshman year of college. I can’t remember exactly the symptoms or pain I experienced then, but it was the same thing where they ran tests for appendicitis and gallstones but nothing came up. Not sure what’s wrong with me, but I am sure that right now this Vicodin is seriously kicking in and I will undoubtedly stop making sense in another minute. Hopefully this will allow me to sleep through the stabbing pain in my stomach, and we’ll catch up later.

On a sidenote, I spent 30 minutes and 2.2 miles on the treadmill yesterday. I ran about 1.3 – 1.5 miles (not sure exactly) and walked the rest, but I alternated 1/4 to 1/2 a mile of each (intervals). My legs felt really heavy so I didn’t do as much as I wanted, but that’s okay. It was still something! I was planning on running more today, but yeeeeah don’t think that’s going to happen. Lights out now, please think pleasant, unpainful thoughts for me.

  1. Feel better Pookie- hopefully it’s something benign like gas (as unpleasant as that sounds) and you will be feeling back to normal soon. **hugs**

  2. OMG! I hope nothing is seriously wrong and you get better soon. I thought I had it rough with some food poisoning. Rest and Get Better!

  3. Girl, you are ALWAYS sick! I think like half of your blog posts have been about you being sick, haha. I hope you feel better asap and that it’s nothing serious! 🙁

    • I AM always sick! Jenny got the immune system of steel at my fragile system’s expense I guess, haha. Dr ordered a CT scan for me so hopefully things will be resolved soon…

  4. My first comment, even though I stalk you relentlessly. I have had this EXACT same thing happen to me twice (once in the summer of 2009, and once summer 2010). in 2009 I went to the hospital and basically the same thing happened that did to you- no diagnosis, but the next day it just went away. in 2010 I left work (dont remember if you were still there at the time or not) and went to an urgent care place instead, they said they would have sent me to the ER if i hadnt had it happen before, and i basically stuck it out and it went away (that time was like 2 days i think). moral of the story– whatever the heck is wrong with you, is wrong with me so if you find out a cause please do tell. and if you’re like me, it will just magically go away, even though right now that seems impossible.

oh okay longest comment ever– let me know if you need anything! miss you!

  5. Ultrasound? As in you are not pregnant? I always think everything may be pregnancy now if it sounds like any symptoms I am having, which it does. I am having horribly intense round ligament pain, which at this point in my pregnancy feels like my abdomen being in intense pain. Anyway, I am glad you don’t have gallstones, appendicitis, or pregnancy. I hope you don’t have any serious food problems either like IBS or gluten-allergy. I hope the doctors (or you) figure out what is wrong soon!
